Hey all, it's been quite a while since I've spent some time on TB, and even though I don't have as much time as I used to, I still try to stop in every now and then to see what's going on. Lots of new people around here and, as always, there are some old friends still going at it. I was reading that one thread about there not being too many "construction threads" on here lately, so I thought this would be a great time to add a new one, as I'm getting ready to start building the yard on my layout. Progress will be slow, as I have other parts of my layout that I'm working on as well, mainly the entire lower level main line. Once that is completed to the yard, then things will pick up. For those of you who would like to see what my layout consists of, you can go to www.owensvalleysub.com and click on "what's new". Ok for the first pic, here is the size of benchwork I'm working with in INCHES. Looking railroad north Looking railroad south Main track 1 coming into the yard, 23" radius, with Main track 2 being a 21 7/8" radius. -Mike
I have also put down some turnout templates to see what kind of throat I'll be able to fit in. So far, I have Main 1 and Main 2, Two arrival/departure tracks, 8 classification tracks and one thoroughfare track. This end of the yard will be the easier end to work out. This will also be the end that has the drill track and will be switched from. Thats it for now, I hope to do some more planning on the other end of the yard soon. -Mike
Mike, I'm happy to see you making progress again! Sorry I missed you during your recent trip "out west"... Regards, Otto K.
That seems like a good size for a dedicated yard space. Is that planned to service the entire layout, I.e All loads start or end in Bishop? Or go thru to "beyond". Envious of your big area to work in. It's kinda funny: I'm currently parked at the north end of Bishop in my big truck. I'm imagining the sounds of straining mu's of diesels starting up the, to me, insurmountable hills between here and Mammoth. I suppose it could be done, but I don't want to pay the labor costs. I enjoy seeing your progress. I have your site bookmarked and frequently check it so look for new additions. Keep up the good, inspirational work. Sent from my SCH-I405 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the comments guys David, I plan for it to be a midpoint yard, with all local traffic ending up there and put into trains going "beyond the basement". Still planning it out in my head, but I will try to have quite a few trains dropping off and picking up cuts of cars that come in from the local industries as they pass over the layout. With the exception of the branch line out to Tonopah, I don't think I'll have any trains completely broken down at Bishop, as I don't think I'll have enough traffic to warrant that. Thanks again for the kind words -Mike
