Well my grandson has a really great idea. He says we need a shooting range where the family can go shooting .. Well I says , there is one on the mountain above town sponsored by the city ... No he says on the layout .. at the south end of the saw mill .. anyone ever put in an outdoor range on their layout ? I have about an acre of free space and the only thing there is the main line so no shooting until we get a 20 foot burm put up , horse shoe style but I am excited to plan this addition out !!
That's a great idea, and I may have the perfect thing for you. Look up "Buffalo Rock Shooting Range" in Ottawa, IL. They have a short rifle range, pistol range, skeet range, and something known as the "Plinking Pit". ANYTHING goes at "The Pit" !!! I have seen just about everything there. Pellet guns all the way up to a cannon that fits in the back of a pick-up (shoots a 3" ball) !!! Also a small pond with Canadian geese. No, you can't shoot them !!! In addition to the gun range, they have trails for dirt bikes and ATVs. Local motocross racers use this place to practice. It's pretty cool, and you will find a gold '74 Suburban there at least once a month !!! Check it out !!!
"A shooting range is a new one on me but what a great idea!" He says as he files the idea away for future reference. Andy Tetsu Uma
Huh. The range, itself, shouldn't be too difficult, but not sure about the shooters. Will be very interested to see how this comes out. Hope it comes with a good RSO.
Can't think of an example for anyone creating such a scene. Even so, this will be a quite unique project.
It is amazing how our grand-children can come up with a modeling idea that is so original and yet the are seen around many railroad areas across the country. Good luck and keep us posted on your outdoor shooting range.
There have been some N scale military figures which may come with rifles, etc. Musket Miniatures has been one source. I used them for jeeps, military trucks, military police/ guards, various personnel on my Navy blimp base layout, and for cowboys on my wild west movie studio backlot scene. Revolutionary war, Civil war, Wild west and WWII figures. Not always easily available I have heard, although they were prompt with my N cowboys and horses about 3 months ago. May look somewhat military. Ready on the right. Ready on the left. Ready on the firing mine. Com-MENCE FI-ring!
Didn't one of the "people-makers" do two sets of hunters years ago ??? Maybe it was in that "other" scale. Don't remember right now !!!
The key idea with a range is a backstop for the bullets. So most are in an old abandoned clay pit, or there are very high mounds of dirt. That plus a little simple covering to keep the rain off of you.
There's a shooting range directly next to the old Rio Grande (now UP) right of way near Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado. Might be some good inspiration for someone. https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=40.053505,-106.141684&spn=0.014207,0.033023&t=h&z=16
Great ideas everyone ... I think I will start with a dio-rama setting with an eye to setting it whole in place . Looking for the shooter/s and RSO will be the main problem . Also lights for nite shooting practice and I like the PIT idea , but this area is new yet and not a lot of residents besides the businesss' that support the mill and the locale MOW crew so should be ok to find a half dozen various shooters ... maybe even a hunting scene as there is a medium size Elk heard in the area .. ( not for long !! ) Any way stay tuned thru the summer into fall as right now I am having too much fun shooting and reloading and honey do 's to get a lot of modeling in , plus I got my 1956 chevy truck running again ( 455 olds, turbo 400, power steering , 3.96 posi ) and every day its calling to my wallet ......
