Well, if passenger trains are your thing, you could do something like Toronto's former Spadina Roundhouse.

It's as finished as can be for now, that was a diorama I did a few years ago to try some new things on. The roundhouse started out as the Atlas kit, I chopped one of the stalls off, shortened the remaining two, and turned the office sideways. It was supposed to be a compressed version of the Omaha roundhouse in Mankato, MN. Someday I'm going to redo some of it, open the doors back up and transplant it to a layout so it can represent it when it was still in use in the early 1990's http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=294215
