I got an RS-3 by way of auction with some other items that I was after ( the RS-3 being a bonus ) I want to replace the rapido coupler/s ( the hook on the nose coupler is missing from the truck ) that is intergal part of the truck .. problem for me is only identifing marks on the engine is on the underside it says Japan... could it be Kato ?? most likely not. I does run very nice and slow speed is all one could ask for. the paint is sharp and is MW branded engine # 789. Is there a way to ID this so I can get trucks that have MT couplers? or cut off the rapido and 1)body mount a MT coupler , 2) glue on coupler to point where I cut off the rapido , or does some one make an coupler jaw to replace the rapido hook ? The engine is split frame, each truck has Japan and this number 17708 on the bottom of each truck next to the word Japan.. TIA !

That's a first-generation Atlas RS-3, made by Kato. MT used to make a body-mount kit that fills in the gap in the pilot. Not sure if it's still available.

Micro-Trains 1152 is the conversion kit you want. It looks like Mike Fifer has a couple available.

What you have was the last run of the original design Atlas made by Kato. On this last run the parts were made in Japan by Kato but painted and assembled by Atlas's contract factory in China. The original box was labeled "Parts Made in Japan" and "Assembled in China". Previous runs were completely made in Japan by Kato and the fuel tank was marked "Kato". Micro-Trains makes a kit which includes pilot inserts and couplers. 1152 (001 32 040) (MTL pilot: front & rear; blk, gray). The original coupler pockets on the trucks will be cut off. The insert is glued in place with CA glue. The coupler pocket is attached with a screw (you have to drill and tap the hole). The kit can be installed without removing the shell from the frame. The process is easier than it sounds.

Mounting #1023 couplers would be some work. Better to buy a conversion kit.

#789 is not a correct unit number for Milwaukee Road.
