I stumbled across this forum a couple of days ago, and found it was just the sort of thing I was looking for. I've had trains since I was 5, but I've moved around so much it's been impossible to finish (OK, a layout is never finished, but I haven't even been able to mostly scenic) a layout since I was a kid. Too many moves (retired Air Force) have been tough on track, boards, pretty much everything. Finally moved to TN and thought we'll be here to stay, with a house with a nice room for a layout (once I convinced my wife we needed a train room), and now we may have to move yet again.
I'm currently working (hah!) in N-scale, and trying to at least put together something I can move safely and then bring back once I retire and integrate with a larger layout. I'm freelancing so I can integrate a couple of areas of interest: a steam "excursion" train up a mountain to a park and mainline passenger traffic as well as the obligatory freight and industries.
I've already seen some interesting discussions, and I look forward to being part of the community.
    Jim

    Jim-

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

How about the possibility of building something modular. Which could then later become part of a permanent layout. Such as Free-Mo, which is quite open to the imagination.

Hi Jim, Welcome to the TrainBoard. I agree with the modular concept, whichever style you prefer. It's a great way to meet new folks at your next location.

Welcome aboard, Jim. I LIKE your idea of a steam powered excursion train on your layout. Keep us informed.

    Hi Jim,
Welcome from another Air Force retiree (civil service) at the other end of Tennessee.
You have found a great forum with lots of users in N scale!

    Welcome, Jim.

I've been out to Cordova in the 70's. Rode a motorcycle on the abandoned NC&StL ROW out that way.

Much of that ROW is now part of a greenbelt bicycle/pedestrian path from Shelby Farms Park into mid-town. Out in my neighborhood it's just abandoned. The old Cordova station still stands (for sale), but there are no tracks.

Is Shelby Farms the old penal farm? I've been gone since '78 and missed a lot of change. Can you still ride the ROW out your way? I always thought the scenery was nicer the farther out of town.

I'm not sure if it's hte old penal farm (we've only been here 4 years) but it is right by the county jail and federal prision... The ROW is just a dirt/grass/stone path in our area now. From Shelby Farms all the way to midtown it's paved.

I was thinking some form of module or section that I could transport reasonably safely. Just need to figure out the concept and how it will fit in with the whole, eventually... Thanks Hytec and BoxcabE50 for the ideas.
