I just got this back drop and was not sure if it looked ok for scale ( N ) I think it looks about ok but before I glue it to the wall I would like input . The video is from my point and shoot so the focus is in and out . below are a couple of stills from the video . Be honest as this layout is in my tv room and most people that come to visit will see it and I want it to look reasonably representitive. I watched your video. It looked fine. Put some more trees to give it depth perhaps. I think people will be interested in the work you put into your layout and not if your backdrop is realistic enough or not? It's a nice layout. Have fun, enjoy it and enjoy working on it. Jim. J & MH RR
Looks fine. I agree about adding more trees behind the track and in front of the backdrop. You might also want to add some terrain in the corner, to lead into the glacial mountains.
The snow scene is nice, but it looks as though you are high above the tree line and forests. Which is a bit unusual.
The section that had the trees is lower down on the mountain, I felt they were too large .... wrong scale as the full sheet had very LARGE trees in the foreground . I have yet to add scenery to this side of the layout and was looking for comments on the mountain to decide if to keep it , move it somewhere else and or look for a scene in better scale ... thanks for looking. No, the peaks of the Cabinets stay white into July and get their first snow about late Sept. The full size picture ( 4 feet tall x 9 feet wide ) of the original scene is wild flowers in bloom , wild grasses are green and very short shadows indicating days getting longer. Really typical of the Rockies of which I am west of the divide by about 250 miles, at the western most edge of the main body of the Rockies. NP and GN used this to lure tourists from the flat lands to see some of the most awesome landscape in the US , and the majority of the rail line/s fom the Dakotas/ Eastern Montana west was very sceinic . Cabinet Mtn's above Sandpoint . Town is lower left, the shot is looking north and east toward MT. I live 6 miles south of town. Come to Sandpoint.com and see the rest of the best in the northwest.. well, Montana has some pretty amaizing scenery like Marias Pass and Glacer Park
I put in some trees and painted out the blue foam board . These shots are not tooo bad. I have a lot of ground cover to add as well as a logging scene yet to compose and install in this area and do the water for the creek. I am still not sure of the backdrop ... I went a head and glued it to the wall ... eh not a good idea but I did not have any masonite or 1/4'' ply to attach it too and I got too anxious to see what it looks like. The grain is reminescient of my 35mm days ...... ughly indeed ... Thanks for taking time to look and remark!! Paul
Follow up shot of back drop with new D3100 Nikon- using 55-200 tele photo lens shot with F stop at 22 on manual, ISO set at 100 . I took 18 fotos in manual mode and one in auto . I do not like the auto setting shot ( I do like the feature if stuff is happening fast and furious ) and I did not buy this camera to shoot on auto , I had enuf of the P&S ...8 of the 17 turned out ok with this one and one or two others fit to publish. I started at 1/60 at 5.6 and worked up to f 32. I used a medium duty tripod , 10 sec timer and diffused light to the right of the shot to emphisize setting sun . Logging trash along the ROW to be picked up once the ground pounders get there as no logging is currently allowed on the main at this time. I have a few other shots of the ROW from the mouth of the west end of the pass looking down on the Clark Fork river flowing into Lake Pend d 'Oreille some what from the east . I like this camera as in manual I can change either the speed or the aperture using the thumb wheel where the thumb naturally rests . I can look thru the lens or at the live display. With three settings for portrait , wide angle and subject moving thru the shot in auto focus and it focus's very fast for a entry level camera. standard shot is 1.2 woo woo woo and I resized this one to 256 k. I have yet to try the video , it shoots in HD 1080p and will look for a 1:1 train to try it out on hopefully this weekend we get some sun shine ...
Are these backdrop scenes part of what you were talking about having commercially done? Is that grain visible to the naked eye? Or just in these photos?
Something like that but not of Estes Park ( I think ) . Shots from around the Cabinets and Selkirks , From Thompson Falls to Bonners Ferry . Some where I can access all year the first year so I can offer seasonal change back drops . Use GPs to shoot from the same place, settings etc. The grain is only bad from about 16-20 inches away. Actually it does not look that bad. Not sure how good the printer is but of course test runs will begin this spring of just shots of the lake and some of the others like Roman Nose towards Bonners Ferry and Antelope Mt toward the border with MT and a couple of others that have craigy type peaks and the eastern approach to the Selkirks.
