[TD]NORTH CREEK, N.Y. – Iowa Pacific Holdings’ Saratoga & North Creek Railway has moved the first carload of freight over the line in 25 years. S&NC operates a 56.5-mile ex-Delaware & Hudson line between a connection with Canadian Pacific at Saratoga Springs and North Creek.

A producer of industrial minerals, SNC Barton International, was the first freight shipper. The company had last shipped over the line in 1988. Charles Barton, the company’s chief operating officer said, “We are pleased with this first shipment and enthusiastic about future volume opportunities with Iowa Pacific.”

The line was built as the Adirondack Railroad in the mid-1800s to open up the Adirondack Mountain region for passenger and freight service. Passenger service was discontinued in 1956. Iowa Pacific purchased the 29-mile Sanford Lake Branch, running from North Creek to Tahawus from National Lead in 2012.

The last freight train over the upper portion of the line operated in November 1989, and in 2003 freight service for the International Paper plant in Corinth was discontinued. The north half of the line was purchased by Warren County in 1997, while the town of Corinth purchased the line from Corinth to Saratoga Springs in 2006.

Iowa Pacific acquired operating rights to the line in 2011 and operates scheduled passenger service over it serving seven intermediate stations. During the winter season, scheduled weekend snow/ski and special event passenger service is provided.

Iowa Pacific is a privately held, Chicago based operator of nine U.S. railroads, and also manages two rail lines in the United Kingdom.

Thanks, Hank. I am always fascinated by re-openings of lines. I hope to read further progress updates.

Not completely on topic, but I don't understand Trains. They send me their newsletter and I can't open anything because I am not a subscriber. I DO subscribe to Classic Trains and can open the stuff they send. CT is a good magazine.

Jim, you have to sign up (register) on line, then you will be recognized immediately as a loyal subscriber...at least that's how I remember it from years ago. From then on it was continuous. Though in my case I must log on each time I visit any Kalmbach site because I block cookies for security reasons, just as I must log on to TB each time.

Stone shipments should be starting this week. This is for a smaller 8,000 ton job. A shipment of 2,000 tons will go directly by rail to Tauton, MA. Another 6,000 will go to Corinth than to truck from truck to barge by barge to Fall River, MA t and back to train to Tauton, MA. I got this information from a video of the meeting on the Warren county site. It's very hard to hear and there was more talk of freight I couldn't make out. They are still working on the big stone contract. Here is the link to the video, I hope it works.

Listening with headphones worked well. The other talk was about potentially moving some logs.
