As many of us potentially can and will drop the PCab onto a hard floor and possibly damage its speed wheel functioning I was thinking: What if 2 walls were added on either side of wheel, a tad higher than wheel so that if it lands face down they'll hit, not wheel...But, this might make operating difficult by getting in the way of your thumb..So, what if same walls (small mounds) were added to the outer edges of the unit in same plane as the wheel ? I have not done this yet and do not know if it would work or even be a hinderance of any kind. I am picturing a sort of rounded off top-hat shape a tad taller than wheel diameter edge perhaps glued/screwed/ even velcro made/attached..
[disclaimer]> This modification has not been made/developed/attempted as of this date..Any attempts to modify your unit may or may not be successful and are solely your responsibility if employed...

    The NCE Power Cab.
Be careful and don't drop the cab. Just like watching your train so it does not run off the layout, again. Forgot how many times I have heard kids run a nice loco off onto the floor.
Our club has cab holders at many places arounf the layout.

I have one on order but haven't actually seen one. Where is this thumb wheel? I see nothing that looks like a wheel in the pictures of it.

Is there any way on the powercab (don't have one, and don't think I've ever seen one) to put a lanyard on it? Either something for your wrist (like a camera strap on a small camera), or something you can loop around your neck? I use them on various tools when working so if I lose my grip on them, they aren't falling 20-30 feet down to their death when working on a scissor lift. It's annoying, but beats having a broken tool and not being able to complete a job.

It's been done. Some users have drilled one or more holes in the plastic case of their Power Cab to attach a lanyard. This has been discussed in the NCE-DCC Group on Yahoo.

This is still not quarantee you wont drop it before puting on the lanyard !! I was wrong about ability to add velcro. There is no room for it..I suppose lanyard is alot better than nothing..I'd like to see NCE reshape cabinet with say, rubber to left and right of throttle controls...same rubber as buttons I suppose...Oh, well...back to the salt mines.....

There is no guarantee that I won't drop my expensive loco when I remove it from its box to place it on the track. Perhaps the whole loco should be made from unbreakable carbon fiber or foam rubber instead of brass or plastic. Loco manufacturers really need to address this!

There is no guarantee that I won't drop my fancy wristwatch whilst placing it on my wrist. I should probably strap in on ONLY if I have first placed a soft pillow under my wrist. In fact, should not every watch come with a pillow to protect the clumsy among us from this possibility?

There is no guarantee that a meteorite won't fall from space, crash through the roof of my garage, and dent the roof of my new Subaru Outback. I really think Subarau should re-design the Outback to guard against this possibility. At the very least, they should offer a meteorite shield as an optional accessory, or perhaps make it standard with the Premium package.

On second thought, maybe taking care of MY things should be MY responsibility. What a novel concept!

I picked up my Power Cab today and see what you mean about the thumb wheel. It's my opinion the the way to go would be to add pads where the labels DEC FAST and DEC are. About as high as the buttons. That should shield the wheel and still leave access to the buttons.

I got my Bachmann 4-6-0 with Tsunami sound 4 days ago but will not be able to try them out for a while. I was hospitalized a couple years ago and had to vacate my house. My brothers moved me out in my absence and they saw the trains as JUST TOYS so didn't treat them with respect. There's some damage to the tracks so will have to redo it before I build the layout again.

Jeff, very funny indeed..And yes, great idea on carbon fiber..put it in breakfast cereals ,too !!..but yeah, unbreakable locos IS a good thought except it's usually a stirrup, coupler,pilot/cow catcher, headlight or other small part that snaps off.not say, the boiler, diesel body splitting...But I still agree...
Far as lanyard/other it's that there still is a potential to drop it putting it on and also is clumsy leaning over and stuff. I di see last night that there is no room as I'd thought for adding velcro-ed on bumpers on face..But, maybe bumpers held onto upper sides spanning across the back; a w i d e U-shape that is velcro-ed to back, UUs pointing upward, of course...Or commercial product that could clip on/slide over, surrounding wheel...Really it's thumb pressure I think more than dropping that gets it whacky...If you do find this problem occuring, please don't call NCE..They know..Just mail it with a small note and they'll remedy it and send it back, free to every owner for life...Or, if I didn't mention it, speed buttons are usually OK and you/we could just use them on out..I tend to like them anyway and can be modified/enhanced same as wheel. ( just in case any newbees don't know this yet)...

Yeah, pads there sound good...My first of 3 DCC locos is the same 4-6-0..Mine runs smooth forward but is a tad jerky in reverse...high back BMF setting (CV 10 ) helps alot.. But maybe drivers are out of quarter...
I'm 65 now, in good health but that doesn't always guanantee a long future..I am planning to have my landlord (much younger than I ) who lives right next door in duplex, call 2-3 best friends if I unexpectedly depart who will be versed in how to dismantle road to at least save expensive switches and NCE controls, and to carefully box up locos/cars to bring to a number of MRR clubs I've become friends with..HO and old N scale, too...
    Mark ....
