First, as far as I know the transition era (say 1945-1960) continues to be one of the most popular eras modeled. During that period there were 120 plus Class 1 railroads. One of these was the C&WC a 590 mile subsidiary of the Atlantic Coast Line RR. Cars of this railroad appeared nation wide, especially their box cars. Secondly, while most of their box cars were steel rebuilds of older double-sheathed cars they also fielded a small fleet of 1949 ACF cars exactly the same as ACL's O-26 class of box cars. These cars while fairly quickly repainted into the ACL after the 1959 merger, some retained C&WC lettering until the mid-1960's. Don't believe that too many of the steel rebuilds ever got ACL lettering. Do remember loading two C&WC lettered rebuilds in 1965-66 with material for the ACL. The steel rebuilds were in both single and double door. The latter 'til the end were marked "Automobile" 'tho all the loads I saw were lumber. Third, speaking strictly for myself I try every 4th or 5th purchase of a freight car to purchase either an uncommon road name or regularly lettered freight cars lettered numbered for a subsidiary, i.e. a Southern Pacific car for T&NO or Union Pacifc for OWR&N. And lastly, I apologize for the fact that I can't post photos - total computer illiteracy. p.s. - Depending on what became available, mark me either the first 5 or if more than 1 type/lettering style - the first 10.
Dave, are you aware of any pictures of the car already posted online? I've looked three places and haven't located any yet. If they were still running around 1965-66 then I'm interested in one for my 1967-68 layout.
Alrighty, I think I came across the type of car you were talking about. C&WC 8094, a rebuilt USRA Double Sheathed Boxcar. A basic scheme but it is sharp! http://steamerafreightcars.com/gallery/boxauto/cwc8094main.html
Thanks G&OM. Basically on the internet I enter "C&WC Box car." Several entries are found under "steam Era Freight Cars." So far all I've been able to find is the "old" scheme for these cars. However the ACF cars delivered in 1949 had a "new" scheme which had the C&WC herald to the right of the car. I've had no success in finding a photo of the 1949 batch or of a steel rebuild which had the "new" scheme. Back in the '60's Walthers had decals for the "new" scheme but not the old?? In any case if several makers found a market for FDD&S box cars, the C&WC for the era should do quite well. Which reminds me somebody found a market for CN&L cars (another ACL subsidiary) years ago. I've seen two photos of such in the various mags over the years.
OK, I'll bite. If this came along I would be in for... uhhh.... several. Thanks for bringing this idea up Dave! By the way, you and I need to connect somehow.. both live in the same city! Dean
Is this link of any use: http://www.trainlife.com/magazines/pages/484/35335/march-1998-page-23 I could do 2 or 3 in N scale!
Don't know what scheme these are, here's a couple pics. http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/...bfd83f-628d-464f-9ca5-33008356d4a1-A28706.jpg http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/...b2e927-0c52-4245-a55c-bfe5b31ce2eb-A28707.jpg Jason
Thanks Ron and Jason you've both put me onto new photos which I never found in spite of what i thought was a pretty thorough internet search. Again, thanks.
