Ok, many of you know that I have been working on a kit for the Bachmann 2-8-0 which would convert it into a Pennsylvania H9/H10. I'm happy to report that the test print of the tender was quite the success! I had to make one small adjustment to the front truck bolster, and I needed to widen the holes in the tender floor for electrical pickup. Other than that, it was ready to go. I'm taking off for work again tomorrow, but over the holidays I was able to add a few details (all of the holes where printed - no measuring or drilling!) and snap a few shots. Clumsy me did damage the tender light - please over look that! It was me not the printer! Now the next step is the paint booth. What color red did Pennsy use on their tender decks and cab roofs? In case anyone is interested I will make the tender available on shapeways, and I will make the most recent revisions of the H9 boiler viewable. Happy New Year!
Wow! Looking good Piperguy. I guess I'll need to get some brass wire for the end rails and uncoupling lever. Thanks, Scott
Why not make a pair of Andrews leaf spring trucks (like Katos) that will take the Bachmann contact strips so we are no forced to use their ignorant looking trucks. Or better yet, why not PRR style tender trucks? Or even better, both.
IF the tender top and engine cab top were paint on a in service engine is debatable. But if they were the word from the Pennsy yahoo group say it would be painted PRR Freight Car Color. Please see <http://pennsyrr.com/component/content/article/86-modeling/172-model-paints-to-match-prr-paints> R Judd
I'll second that!!!!!!! I would love to see some commercially avaialble Pennsy style tender trucks. -Jonathan Vincent
I think offering the tender on Shapeways is a good idea. It could be used for other models, too, I think about my PRR L1 GHQ kits which might use some different tenders for variety. All PRR model components are most welcome.
This is part of the project I would like to undertake, but it's taking back seat to getting the rest of the boiler finished. Once it's finished, I will go back and add the trucks. Since the Pennsy did interchange a lot of their equipment, I will offer the H9/10 as a complete kit- boiler, tender, pilot, and trucks- and each piece individually.
I'm not an SPF, but If this is an easy drop on for the stock 2-8-0 even I might be interested. I usually use cabose red for tender decks/cab roofs, but I was just trying to match the b man Western Maryland loco.Tender does look nice !.....Mike
Piperstguy, I see you are still having issues with the PRR H9/10 firebox/boiler interface. I have a large drawing which might be of help to you. I am currently having trouble getting a scan of it, but if you PM me your mailing address, I would be glad to send you a hard copy. Everything else looks great. FS P.S. - Why is it when I hit your embedded "H9/10" link I get an ebay page selling a jacket?
I have no idea! I have been noticing things like that when I reply from my iPhone. Go figure! Im very interested in the drawings. I think I might finally have something I like, but I'll take all the information I can get! I'll send you a PM ASAP! Thanks!
Here's the latest! I ordered a test print today! I will make all of these parts available separately for your kit-bashing needs. I have drawn two different styles of pilots, which are available in my shapeways store. Would the cab be a useful part? I drew it separately and could easily make it available as well.
Piper, I'm not an SPF, but I've been following this thread with interest because I have a similar project in mind (ATSF 1950 class 2-8-0). Tried building a tender for it using and learning Sketchup...well it's got a learning curve I haven't yet conquered, especially the curved surfaces. You've made a lot of progress and I'm curious about the test model...I'm still picking up segmentation around the sand dome and there's something funky going on where the firebox joins the boiler? Nobody said it was gonna be easy....thanks for sharing your progress! Best, Otto K.
PiperguyUMD, I contacted you a few weeks ago via Shapeways about the tender and H10. Something to think about would be variants of this boiler for other locomotives. For example, I think the E6 used the same cab and boiler. Swap the cab for the K4 style cab, and you have a G5, etc. While an E6 chassis would have to be bashed, a Kato JNR C11 or C50 could be modified to work for a G5 mechanism. These are just variations of the work you've already done! I'm beginning work on a G5 boiler now using a Minitrix K4 shell and a C11 as the mech, in fact. I'm anxious for the final version of the "kit" to be available! I've already picked up a pair of B-mann 2-8-0's for the conversion! Can't wait!!! Chris
Hey Panzer, I hit an M-4 link in a thread on SP locos, and it took me to an Amazon page selling Maxi Tampons - something goofy is going on here! I tried the same link in 4 different browsers, and got the same page every time!
Hi Chris, just checked out the pictures of the boiler/cab unit, and it looks like the area where the boiler meets the Belpaire firebox sides could use a little massaging. If the boiler diameter is correct, then the firebox needs to be wider. All pictures I've seen show the firebox sides as tangent to the boiler where they meet, and then flairing out slightly towards the bottom. GHQ made a conversion kit for the Kato Mikado to an L1s, which shows this area quite well. Too bad those kits are very hard to find now. Don't mean to rain on your parade; hope you don't take offense. This shows it very well: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/prr/prr-s3500.jpg
None taken at all! I know the Pennsy fans will put it under the microscope! I'm primarily a Western Maryland guy, I thought it would be cool to have a PA H9 bumping around Hagerstown! I'm still not quite happy with the boiler/firebox junction, but I think it's close, and for what it's worth, it matches the dimensions in the drawings I have. That being said, I want to see how the sketch up file is rendered by the printers. It's the same difference as listening to midi music verse live music, I think the final product will look (sound) much better in real life. The portion of the boiler that is stretched over the firebox to the cab is really quite small, I'm talking less than 3 inches. The way it's rendered in the screenshots make it look like its much more. In most of the photos I've compared, there is a slight bulge over the firebox at the widest point of the boiler. It's a very distinct look, and one that I want to capture in the model, but there's just no way of knowing how it will be rendered. I promise, pictures will be up as soon as I have the model in hand! Thanks for your input!
Hey, where did your PRR H9 project go? I was checking Shapeways to see if you had any updates, or (hopefully) if the H9 was finally available, and it was gone! Did something go wrong, or is this the quiet before the big reveal?
Well, a few days after I ordered my test print, I received and email that told me it couldn't be printed because some of my walls where too thin. The pointed out two spots in the email, but every time I repair it, I get another email pointing out more thin spots! All of the thin spots have been in the plumbing, so now that its been completely redrawn, hopefully they will be able to print it. This current test print is due in on the 11th if all goes well. It stinks because I have a box of decals, paint, and a few detail parts ready to go!
