    Howdy Gang,

I have an Athearn C&O Mogul that is not DCC ready and was wondering if anyone out there has tried this before? Was hoping to add sound to it also!

    Thanks,

    Ben

    Hi Ben,

I have 2 Roundhouse 2-8-0's which are basically the same as your Athearn 2-6-0. I have successfully fitted a Digitrax DZ125 into both, sadly no sound as room is very tight, that’s not to say it can’t be done! Anyway my guide to doing this is no longer active on the net but being me I kept a copy of the web page on word doc.

So, these are not my words or pics but.........

This is a tender install as there is no room in the boiler to fit a decoder. The sides of the coal bunker must be raised by about 3mm to allow the decoder to fit comfortably.

The piece of bent brass just slides under the plastic mount as the frame is used to pick up left rail power.

Place a small piece of Kapton tape across both contacts, just behind the front motor mount going from left to right. This is to stop any shorting between the left and right rail pickups (this is not shown in the picture by the way). Add a small piece of PCB to connect the motor and pickup wires.

Remove both brush holders, cut the tabs down and solder the grey and orange wires to each tab.

Completed tender with raised coal bunker sides.

Hope this helps and thanks to who ever originally did this!
