Also Bendtracker, those Gp40-2's look great! No need for the White 'R' herald on that! Minimal white is what looks best. I am sure that whomever was in charge of paint schemes had this in mind whenever the order was run by them just before shutdown. I like all the Rock Island touches. I just wish we could get Nathan P135R24's for N scale. Hell the Southern and NS use/d that horn. Best one I could find was the K5 from BLMA:" LOL, like Ghengis said, They would be even blacker in no time! Boxcab, "In times of low maintenance" why take all the character away from the road? LOL Thanks Ghengis. I agree, I wish we had a better choice in horns but I'm happy with the BLMA's. I have also acquired a few of the two piece Atlas horns that they made for the Southern SD24's. Still not sure these are proto or not, but they are close enough for me once you get the dirt and grime on them! Something else I have on my bucket list. In my universe, I followed the idea of the black image that they were already using with some of their freight cars: Gons, coil cars and hoppers. I then made a few decals for boxcars, Reefers, bulkhead flats and a caboose. I even have some artwork for some reefer trailers for my Shrimper train. Although they will be Blue not black for obvious cooling reasons. Then again, once the soot and grime settles in and lack of cleaning, probably wouldn't and difference in the long run. Again, in my universe, the two GP's I did was nothing more than an advertising gig that management dreamed up, but the crews were already complaining about how hot the cabs were getting on the southern subdivisions and the fact that the company would not A/C equip anything yet. So I they will go back to the Blue and White but with ROUTE ROCK in white and a black "R" on the new loco's, rebuilds and newer used loco's. Allen...
Post up the pictures so people will know what you are talking about! Let me know when you mount up an Sou SD-24 horn and snap a pic to show how it looks compared to RI prototypes! Also any pics of the reefers on your "Shrimper"?
I suppose that would make good sense, just got in a hurry and never thought about adding the pics here. So...here again are the two G40-2's
I don't have any pics of my reefers on the Shrimper itself as I don't have much scenery for a good backdrop. Here are some other car types that I played around with. I have an LPG and bulkhead flat but I can't get to them right now. And of course the Caboose...
Here is the car that started this whole decal game. When I first seen this car in the Morning Sun's Rock Island Freight Car Guide, I knew I had to do this one. This was done well before Atlas came out with this scheme on their 90 ton 3 bay hoppers, which was a Foob. This MDC 70ton hopper is the closest thing to the prototype. All of these decals were made using CorelDraw and an ALPs printer since most of the logos and artwork was white. I started with this car and then for the others I just kind of followed suit and expanded with the scheme that Red Caboose used on their Coil Cars. Allen...
Allen, they must have been looking at too many tar roofs when they came up with this idea. Better yet, if sprayed bed-liner existed then, they could have have shot the black with that. HuskerN
HuskerN: Does look like it doesn't it? If they did use the bed-liner product, at least it wouldn't peel and flake off or show that much dirt and grime! LOL rpeck and OC Engineer JD: Thanks for the comments guys!
Heck, that bedliner works great on our Jeeps, why not the Rock Geeps? Nice work Allen, I have heard of this scheme. Makes you wonder what would have happened if the Rock would have lived on past 1980.
LOL! I was wondering what you and GTRail was referring to? I went back and re-read the posts several times and couldn't find anything referring to diesel! Now I have to go back and fix the artwork for any future cars.....Dangit! Actually the truth is the car had a leak and the fumes messed with the painter's head as they were applying the decals.... Maybe I could sell it on eBay for an exorbitant amount of money and claim it was a factory miss print and there's only one like it??? Might work.
Allen, I have a boxful of Sunrise Enterprise parts. I don't remember if they did a Nathan P135R24 airhorn, but if they did, I probably have some Doug
Not sure if the Sunrise horns are the proper ones, but they would work for me. Let me know. Thanks Doug
