Eastern Steam...............Transition to WHAT? More Steam? Oh you mean transition to DIESEL?!?! Diesels, we don't need NO stinking diesels!!!!
Northeast Pennsylvania,Wilkes Barre/Scranton coal region in 1972..So,pretty much every single diesel owned by any railroad in 1972 is fair game,LOL!! I have primarily LV,CNJ,D&H,EL,RDG,B&O,& N&W,but I also have most of the lease units that ran here, and a lot of pool power you wouldn't think of..I also have modern stuff,Conrail just before the NS/CSX takeover, and "some" steam, but "some" is probably over 50 locomotives..
Union Pacific in early Summer 1951 (scenery, structures) with trains, equipment and vehicles through 1956. The "helper district" between Ogden, UT and Wahsatch (where the 3700 class Challengers cut off, turned at the wye, and came down the 60 mile grade light to pick up another diesel or turbine-powered train to shove). ABS signals, double tracked mainlines with the single-tracked, unsignaled Park City Branch going south from Echo Junction. Big Boys, Challengers, FEF's, MacArthurs, FA's, PA's, E's, Erie-Builts, F3's and F7's, Geep 7's and a few 9's with GP-9 cabless B's, Baby Turbines, Verandas (both without auxiliary bunker C tenders), with the occasional Consolidated and USRA Light Mikes with the big Sweeny stacks. Also the occasional 9000 and 2-10-2. Over 40 passenger trains going east and west every day and every non-helpered freight being pulled by one of 25 Big Boys. Two daily locals (the Evanston Local and the Park City Local) every day except Sundays. Spectacular scenery, spectacular trains. Cheers! Bob Gilmore
I prefer to run a bit of everything because I can appreciate all eras and all types of trains. I've got 1910's Virginia and Truckee equipment running alongside GS-4s, SD50s, and shinkansen. I basically run whatever suits my mood on a given day. Today just happened to be a B30-7 type day with TOFCs.
I model in order of my recent activity: Boston & Maine: 1975-1983 Allen Dustin era, pre Guilford, NH. Chicago Burlington & Quincy: 1960-1969 Pre BN, maybe a little early BN, IL. BNSF: 1995-current Anything that catches my eye and needs to be modeled. Any interesting modern midwest shortline.
Eastern. Early diesel. late, late steam. Pittsburgh area. Focus on P&LE (NYC), with nods to PRR, B&O, B&LE, Union, Montour, PCY. Additional focus on Pittsburgh Railways (trolley), which determines RR era at any given point.
Summer 1973, interior of British Columbia at the Canada - US border..Canadian Pacific sub division and interchange with the BN (ex GN) - allows for CPR traffic with CN traffic due to occasional re-routes (they always have track issues LOL) and the rainbow period of the BN (ex GN, NP, CBQ and SP&S) plus a smattering of PGE at a barge terminal.
No particular era. My layout is freestyle to fit the space. NOT prototypical. I like the diesels and steam. I have 2 small 2-4-0 steams and 1 4-8-2, it runs the mainline only. I have somewhere about 12 diesels of different types. I am trying to stay with BN, BNSF, SF, Frisco, Union Pacific and ATSF; I do have one SP steam. All in fun, if I like the looks and the price is right, I will buy it..In fact I built the layout only buying about 20 feet of new flex track, the rest was given to me or I bought it used in a lot sales. I was determined to build on a limited budget and so far I have managed to do it.
Northeastern late steam to mid-century diesels, almost entirely NYC System with a hand full of PRR equipment.
I will run anything. I am more of a train buff then model railroader. I just like to relax and watch them run . I don't really want to run a real railroad. Just something that that looks nice and works well.
I model Premillenial CSX. That is CSX from the start in 1986 to the Conrail merger around 2000. That means I stop at Bright Future. No Dark Future on my road.
I model the Pennsylvania Division of the NYC (through the Grand Canyon of PA) and the E-L/LV/D&H trackage from Binghamton, NY to Sayre, PA. The era is roughly early 50's to early 70's. However, given the amazing amount of rail traffic from Gang Mills, NY into Wellsboro, PA recently due to the natural gas industry, I've found that some Wellsboro & Corning SD40-2 (and leased N&S) motive power has shown up hauling covered hoppers of sand and tank cars of water. It has led to a lot of confusion for the rail fans
