I love this forum but my tastes have changed, so I am looking at other forums as well. The thing is I need european prototype info and people who like the same. So a while back I asked a european proto forum in the US if I could get a temporary account to see what their forum was like. Nope, they only allow paying members into their site. How can I decide to join a forum I have never even seen? I never joined even though it seems like something I would want to check out.

It's only common sense to have a free trial period. I smell elitism

I would walk away from any Forum that only allowed paying members in.

We have an International Railways Forum right here at TrainBoard. All it takes is for people to just use it. Totally free!

I agree. And I also agree with Yoho - walk away.

    Boxcab is right too.

Personally I would never EVER pay for access to a forum, too much good, free information out there. (Plus what Ken said)

While I agree, it seems like train forums should be free, it seems as usual, you get what you pay for. Most of the train forums I have joined, other than Atlas, are very slow or nearly dead, including this one, Model Train Forums and a few others, and every time I go back to visit, there ain't much new of interest and have very little new items of discussion. And now Atlas is dead. *sigh*

There is one forum that consistantly seems to have meaty topics and be seem to be fairly busy when I do searches, and I may just pull the trigger and pony up. Train Orders.

Participate and enjoy your hobby. Simply put, you only get out of your hobby what you put into it. If something is missing from your club, or in this case forum, ad to it. I could complain that there is not enough CB&Q on here, but would rather start a topic in the Fallen Flags section and see what happens. Do some research, ad some data, post some pictures and after a while you'll see people with like interest posting.

Gripes? You want gripes? OK, it's going to be sunny and pleasant all weekends, with highs in the 70s and low 80s here in New England.

How am I supposed to get any modeling done under these conditions?

I am making this post as a member and not as a moderator of Trainboard.

    Each to his own.

    If one is not happy with "activity" here at Trainboard, there are basically two solutions;

    1. Make it more interesting for you by being an active, positive poster in threads either started by others or by yourself.
    2. Find another forum or start your own. It isn't that hard and will take only one or two minutes a day on the technical side of operating a forum and only one or two minutes a day dealing with people having or making "issues" and making sure the forum member abide by the forum rules, if any.

I would walk away from any forum that didn't at least offer a preview or free trial kind of thing. Having to pay up-front for any access is just goofy.

Have you considered starting a TrainBoard group about your particular area of concern? For example, if you are into, say, Swiss narrow gauge, maybe start the "Swiss Narrow Gauge" group. I wanted more logging activity here so I started a group and slowly we have built up some content.

    Good luck!

Problems I have seen with specific names or ares are not much activity. This is why came here, it has some for all IMO. There is not 24/7 activity, but I have never not had a question or seen a question not go unanswer at least withen 24 hous.

How "European" do you want your information to be? Francois mentions points of help, but I'm sure several of the UK members on here would be happy to assist with UK specific matters. I know at least one is actually a rail employee.

Well, get in there and start poking, prodding. Activity breeds activity. Inaction results in nothing happening. Sitting back, waiting on someone else rarely works out. Invite friends, keep at it. Be patient, give it time to become much more widely known.

I guess I will have to plead guilty to that one. Someone asked here back in January what prototypes go with what N scale freight cars, and I have not finished answering. May take me all year just to answer the questioin as far as boxcars.

Speaking only for myself, I would be interested in seeing anything from past to present from all around Europe. Any gauges, steam, diesel and electrifications.

Whoa! ... I left this and just came back to see lots of discussion here. :)

I do post my interests here, but I'm a niche model railroader, in fact I've switched back to being a toy train runner; somehow I realized I like 60's 70's trains. I mean toy trains built in that era. I have some newer stuff but the old not quite prototype stuff kind of takes me back now. Top that with being an oo/ho garden railway fan; discovered that the Brits have been doing really fine OO gauge outdoors.

I belong to a Italian language forum. The Hornby site in Britain for my british steam and deltic addiction. And best of all I found a small OO garden railway forum, where we chat about just about everything including our veggie patches.

Francois, thanks for that link I will be sure to stop by that site, as I have quite a few SNCF models by Jouef and Lima from the 70's. In fact I have a beautiful P241 that is the pride of my collection and a 3 coach CIWL train.

So my real gripe was exactly what Candy described as elitism. I want to see what the secret club is like, but I can't be a member until I'm a member.

I wasn't knocking train board in any way what so ever. i've been on here for a long time and don't plan on leaving anytime soon. Yeah I know, start a thread and people will start talking, but I was hoping to tie in with people who are doing some of what I am interested in, which is SNCF, FS, and British outline. (i've learned Brit train talk so I can say outline instead of prototype. he he he )

Oh yeah, as a kid I always wanted a Sante Fe super chief made out of athearn kits, so at some point there will be US prototype on the layout too.

Beasley, you cracked me up. ha ha

Oh yeah, here's something French for Francois.

P241 ( or is that P142?) by Jouef on my garden railway last summer.

I looked at that site and came to find out it's for N scale. I do have N scale but all of my european trains, sadly, are in ho.
