I want to model NS 4610 in Southern paint & was wondering what is the external difference between a GP59 & a GP60.

I don't have the data in front of me (I'm at the office... :) ) but I do know that the GP59 has the 12-cylinder 710 engine whereas the GP60 has the 16-cylinder engine. IIRC the GP59 has six power assembly access doors on the side of the hood while the GP60 has eight - so I think that the GP60 is a little longer. I can get the info at home later today or you can look it up on the web (unless someone graciously pops up with the info).

    Hope that helps.

That's a good thread although his Atlas GP40 Mechanism has the wrong version of the bloomberg trucks I don't know why he would do that. If we're talking HO, I would just go out and buy either an Athearn or P2k GP60 and perform the mods as described. GP59s and GP60s share the same frame.

Just to add to the data, the GP59 and GP60 share a common underframe - so both are the same length. Small detail - production GP59s have seven widely spaced handrail stanchions along the long hood, while the GP60 has 10. And the GP59 kitbash thread referred to by dti406 is a good representation of the GP59 appearance.

Agreed in H0 scale, for sure. It's pretty easy to modify the trucks in N scale to get the correct look. In fact, you might be able to get the N scale truck frames from Atlas. (If you do order from Atlas, don't just order the frame. The snubber is a separate part. Don't ask how I know.)

Remember the modeler was doing a what if model and many railroads did not use the Blomberg M Truck like the DT&I only used the Blomberg B Truck.

    Nick,

You'll want the March 1993 issue of Model Railroad Craftsman as it has an article on both these locos. It has rosters and drawings for both, with the drawings showing all five sides: top, right side, left side, front and rear.

I don't know that I've ever seen a 60 series on bloomberg Bs. They actually replaced the rubber spring with leaf springs for the 60s, so it kind of looks like a cross between the 2 anyway. It's a whatif of course and so not unreasonable, but it isn't a particularly plausible one to me and I'm no rivit counter.
