Hello all, I'll be travelling from Denver, CO to Canton, Il over T-day. Going via I-80. Any train museums, open houses, etc. worth stopping at along the way?? Could also go I-70 if worthwhile. TIA! Mark
There's always Kenefick Park in Omaha off of I-80. Big Boy and Centennial on display. My first visit chronicled here. It's a little tricky to find, but is pretty cool. Depending on your driving schedule, the timing can be difficult from Denver, too. The park closes at 4:00 PM, I believe. Brian
The Iowa Railway Museum is in Boone, Iowa, about 30 miles or so north of Des Moines. http://www.iowarailwaymuseum.org/ There's also the UP Museum in Council Bluffs, Iowa. http://www.uprrmuseum.org/ For more railroad fun and adventure in Iowa, check here: http://www.iowadot.gov/iowarail/history/attractions.htm
The Union Pacific Yard in North Platte, Nebraska is along the way for you. The have the overlook tower at Bailey yard. It is really quite a sight to be able to see all that action in one place. Then is you want to stay OFF the interstate for a while, US30 stays pretty close to the UP main for a lot of miles.
