November 18, 2011 Does any one do this? I have talked to the boss and got the  to bring in and display my 27" x 47" N scale layout. I just took a few locos and some track last year and it seemed people really liked them. This year I will be going all out with a running layout. http://www.greatesthobby.com/wgh/MS_2223.html Dave
I did once. With permission, I did a big Unitrack setup on the conference room table and brought in cake, too. I don't do it any more but I do have a train running around my Christmas tree at work - 9 hours a day, 5 days a week for 6 weeks. And for those who are concerned, one year I was a little late bringing it in and my boss' boss' boss asked me if there was a problem as I hadn't brought it in yet. He looked forward to it. Cool that you are doing this. I think I might be inspired to do a Z scale loop this year since we are currentlly in temporary space. Andy Tetsu Uma
I did the last year that I wasn't working at home! I brought in my "starter layout" (24 x 27 inches) which I also displayed at shows when I was a World's Greatest Hobby ambassador I also did a radio interview the same day that lasted about 15 minutes, to which at least one person was listening...
I've done it a couple of times. Seems I always forget, or travelling. It would be nice if WGH would send out a reminder a week or two prior. I always set up a loop of Unitrack with my Zephyr and a few select locos/rolling stock. I will do it again this year if I can.
Well I'm going to take one of my Top Gons to school to celebrate, and this is my 100th!!! post on Trainboard!:tb-biggrin:
N scale seems a natural - at least as far as bringing in a layout. Here's one I made to go in the corner of my old office cube. I can't post a link yet, but there are photos at my website abqbachmans. -Blaine
We should be setup again from the Denver Show so I just might do it this year. I hope the boss doesn't get too upset with me if I do.
I will try and keep this thread going as a reminder. Built a nice case around the layout with a plexiglass top and front. And every thing is glued down so it is ready for transport now. Couple pics... Dave
My wife and I both have been fortunate to have office jobs in our whole careers, so bringing in trains and stuff was something I considered "no big deal". I would bring in trains and mount them loosely on my desk pen set, and from the beginning it meant nothing but good news for me. Over the years, I found no less than 10 fellow model railroaders in the city workforce, one of them became my mentor in N, developed a good kinship with the former president of FECRR, and even worked with them to beautify the r/o/w which passed through the middle of the City. As for my wife, she worked at IBM Credit Union in Boca, and used a small layout to decorate a door for the Christmas contest. I painted a Bachmann F9 the IBM turquoise color, glued on a logo from a carefully trimmed and thinned business card, and used some MicroScale decals to trim and letter it, along with some Christmas decorations. She won 1st prize that year, which came in handy at $250 (times were good then) but after Christmas the loco went missing. When I met with the President of the Credit Union over a golf trip, I saw the loco sitting on display in his office showcase of mementos. Needless to say, I let it slide. Over the years, I have not had one negative comment aimed at me for bringing in a train to the office. At least not to my face. And this is a relatively hostile interpersonal environment. This will be my first year participating. I'm an N scale guy, but I just got a great deal on this at a local antique shop: I'm thinking a little oval and some scenery in my briefcase would be pretty cool! The article on the World's Greatest Hobby website mentions the GM Design Center. Anyone work there or have information on what they do for this "holiday?" I work in Detroit, so I thought I'd ask.
Another bump... Less than 3 weeks to go now. I am getting excited about this year. I got my little layout ready to go. Get your models ready, ask the boss (if you need to) and do it. If I can get even just one more person at work interested, it will be worth the effort. Dave
I take trains to work occasionally when working an overnight that's pretty quiet. My overnight sergeants don't mind as long as I don't miss any calls or radio traffic. I usually bring a small project I can put aside when i get a call. That's how i got the nickname trainwreck.
I bring stuff in all the time. It's really a great conversation starter. I like to assemble models, weather cars, change out couplers on my lunch break. I typically bring on stuff that I can easily work on without too many tools. I also like to bring in new acquisitions and show them off.
