First you need to prep the pond bottom and sides. You prabably want to slope the sides some using a thin plaster. Most ponds have a sloping bank along at least part of the pond. Since this appears to be foam in the photo you want to use waterbased paint for the bottom colors. Any solvent based paint will eat up the foam. Once that is dry you then want to seal the surface well because most of the water products out there have a way to find a way out of the area if it isn't sealed good. Several coats of paint may be enough of a sealer. Depending on the depth of the pond a lot of underwater vegetation will be found near the edges and the middle maybe clear of vegetation. Any rocks or submerged branches, barrels or trash glue in the pond before water pouring. Donot try to put any reeds or cattails in as you will have a problem with the water material wanting to wick up into it. Once the water is dry then do reeds or cattails by drilling small holes in it and inserting colored horsehair using Scenic Glue that dries clear. The trim the reeds when all are set. Cattails can be made by dipping the horsehairs in paint, sort of like making a candle, and letting them dry before dipping again. I use a light brown paint on green horsehair.

This is a stream feeding a log pond with cattails along the edges.

This is another pond created by a small dam that channels water to a sawmill flume. The horsehair reeds show here and the Beavers are HO scale Rats with their tails hammered flat. The Beaver Lodge is made from dried putty, domed shaped, and has a mixture of horsehair glued on it. The pond ripples are done by using Water Effects and brushing as it dries.
