I picked up my first copy of the November Trains magazine at my LHS. I really enjoyed the content, especially the 51 pages on Intermodal. I'm in the process of updating my transition era layout to include modern diesels and intermodal traffic. Needless to say this magazine issue is timely. To those long term subscribers, is the quality of the November issue typical of the monthly quality ? If it is, I will be subscribing. Thanks in advance for your comments. Keith.
I'm a 50 year plus subscriber. If I got really short of cash, Trains would be the last to go. Like any magazine, especially these days, they've had their ups and downs, but since Jim Wrinn became editor it's been mostly ups. Trains is the one magazine I really look forward to each month.
I haven't subscribed in over a decade (can't afford it) but I've noticed in a few copies my son has that the quality is still quite high.
The Nov issue is a yearly special it seems, last year was all about Coal. Not all the other issues are as big. I will agree, the overall quality is good and worth the subscription price IMHO. Very good writing, and not just a bunch of half ass filler articles.
I absolute loved the article about the rebirth of CSX by Rush Loving (The Men who Loved Trains) and the Norfolk Southern Pokey District modernization. Both articles were top notch. Even though I only buy certain issues, Trains is prob the best Kalmbach magazine since its so focused on railroading news and stories.
I probably buy Trains magazine 6 times a year. This was probably the best issue I've read in the past couple of years, which is saying a lot, because it's one of the better magazines out there.
