Not sure if this is electronics question or a general question, has anyone used bulk hobby fiberoptics for lighting on their Locos? Specifically, since I just want constant on ditchlights and want to save money buying bulk LEDs. Has anyone simply used Fiberoptics "glued" to the front of the LED to run lights to various locations? . I'm looking for tips and ideas. And possibly brands and FIber diameters.
I've been using fiber optics in my N-Scale locomotives for a long time. I use .010, .020 and .030. I replace vertually all of the stock head and back-up lights. I bought mine from an E-Bay guy. In my opinion-it's the way to go. Wolf
I am about to try it. I got a one dollar sample pack from these guys. The are mostly Star Wars effects and "Star Ceilings" for home decorators, but they offer this sample pack. There are many different types of fiber optics. The FAQ there will give you some ideas.
Yes, I'd love to see examples. I've also wondered about using fiber optics to install step lights and those marker lights along the side.
Michael, I'll try and get some photos this evening. Some of my locomotives are in my photo album (rail images). I think. LOL!! Wolf
I have used fibre optics for HO scale but & for the steplights of locos for ditchlights bulbs can be used in the decoder has functions for it i use SMD's as they run cooler & last for ever :tb-biggrin: this link below shows installation of ditch lights in an N scale Kato SD70 if this is possible in N then HO should be fine http://blip.tv/reality-reduced/episode-10-1309367
I use heat shrink to attach my fiber optics to my bulbs, If your careful enough you can use 2 fiber optics for duel headlights from the same bulb. You might have to double the shrink wrap on the fibers to get the same size as your bulb or leds. experiment , Jim. .
