My Local NMRA divisions contest for this month was to create an MOW car. Well, I had never tried an NMRA contest before (nor had I gone to any NMRA meetings for that matter) so I decided to give it a whack. My modeling skills are decent, I haven't had much practice with detailing, so this will be a simple project. This is an Athearn Bluebox Heavyweight I've had around for years. I bought it back when I was into anything trains and after I started prototype modeling, it was stripped of all parts needed elsewhere. Windows, coupler boxes, weights, etc. My plan is to strip the car, repaint it silver/grey, decal it for the Santa Fe, Install some roof details, add a cheap simple interior, and to improve the operation of the car. I'm also considering getting some sheet styrene and patching over a window to make it appear that a steel plate got welded over it in the conversion. I couldn't find any prototype pictures of a real Santa Fe diner that had this treatment So I decided to use a Walthers Photo for Inspiration. I have no idea how they would have re-done the interiors on these when they converted these to MOW cars. Could anyone provide some insight on what was normally changed when they transferred these cars? thanks Geep_fan
ok, this project didn't die, here's some update photos.' wearing silver and about to receive decals and detail parts.
with nothing to do today, this flew right on by. pretty much done with it. I have thought of building an interior for it when I get the material, but for now, thats all folks!
Geep_fan, Looking good! I am about to take on a similar project too. I hope you fare well in the nmra contest! Robert
