Begining October 1, 2004 NSN-II will ship an etched Nickel Silver set of replacement SIDE PANELS for the Con-Cor AUTORACK that will allow operators of this railcar to get as "Micro Trains" close as it is possible to do at a reosnable cost. This is a re-run of a set that NSN released many years ago, but this time Nickel Silver was chosen as the metal because it tarnishes over time - we - you, me and the mouse - call it weathering. To install the panels all you have to do is pop off the thick OEM ones and ACC the NSN ones and in a few seconds you are done. The item is #AR10 AUTORACK SIDE PANEL SET - N/S. It has a Retail List Price of $11.99. WIG-WAG, BLW and Rio Grande should have them in stock by October 5th This is a very limited re-run - only 500 kits can be produced. Hope tha this is good news for he Con-Cor AUTORACK owners. Toots
As I remember, the difference used to be in cost. You had to buy two of the JnJ sets to do one car, as opposed to one NSN set. Is that still the case?
hey "Secret" - if you like 'em like they are - hang in there. I just didn't like them which is why I designed the replacment etch set some years ago and saw sales of more than 3900 kits happen in short order and they listed for some 6 bucks more - back then. Nick I think the JnJ set is stainless steel - paint has trouble sticking to it and weathering is out of the question - with Nickel Silver you get weathering that happens while you sleep. "eagle2" - each NSN kit does one car. Toots
Here's a photo of the JnJ detail part I found on the web. I think it may be from JnJ's own site(?) http://users.dwx.com/~jnjtrains/products.htm#Products
I have used the JnJ etched panels on one Con-Cor autorack. They are quite nice! Here's a quick shot of the car witht he JnJ panels. I did remove the plastic behind them for a see-thru effect.... Russ [ 20. September 2004, 03:12: Message edited by: tehachapifan ]
I have a few sets of NSN ones which I never got around to fitting. They do look good, and one day I may try fitting up one car, then offering for sale, as I am changing to HO!
No, I do not intend to forsake N scale production I just wanted to something completely different in my spare time. Spare time.......what spare time?
Frankly, I'm disappointed with the MT autoracks... They are TOO HIGH, the center of gravity is TOO HIGH, they wobble, they constantly end up LEANING sideways and they are almost impossible to run without derailing (PECO Code 55, 24" min radius - with ZERO derailments of any other cars). The problems are all related to the friction between the coupler extension and the plate that maintains the coupler height. I cannot find a way to have both ends "free" - AND - have the body sitting on the car in such a way that it does not slip to the sides at an angle. Maybe I just have the one defective car, but I'm waiting for the RC cars before buying any more. Lou
