Hoping some one out there can help me with the JMRI program. I am attempting to use it as a switch list generator. I have entered cars, locations, engines, etc a number of times but I cannot get it to "build" a train. I think I have missed something in the engines section but I don't know for sure. Does anyone know of something I can try to at least narrow down my possible errors? I have the report section marked as very detailed but it really does not give much information on the situation. Thank you.
Robert, I am unable to help since I have never used JMRI to do what you want (although I hope to eventually). I have used JMRI for other purposes and can say that the learning curve can be pretty steep, but it is worth the patience once you get the hang of it. I use JMRI to control signals and turnouts on my layout- took a while for everything to click, but now I can't imagine how I could get along without it. Hang in there and hopefully someone with experience will respond shortly (they usually do ). Jamie
I can't help with JMRI. The yahoo group on RailOp has had some comments comparing it with RailOp. No help there, either but is there a JMRI yahoo Group? Maybe some help there. Here is the link you need other than getting a good answer here.
Yes, there is a Yahoo Group for JMRI users.. http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=JMRI I can't help with your problem, but you should find your answer there.
Fellow Forum Members Thank you for all your assistance. I shall try the yahoo group. No intentions of giving up or in here.
You can also try our DCC & Electronics forum, as this is a computer program it may garner more interest there.
I just d-loaded JMRI, and will look into it. I'm fascinated by model railroad operations, and have bee trying to work out a system for myself. I've spent a lot of time toying with, "Easy Model Railraod Inventory" (EMRI), and this JMRI looks similar.. operations-wise. There isn't the airtificial intelligence I was hoping for.. I naively assumped that if a program knows where the cars are, where they can go, and has some sort of "sequential-stop, system map", in it; it could generate a logical traffic flow, and things like switch-lists were an obvious byproduct. I'm not even sure the most expensive payware, operations software are that "hands off". With EMRI, you still have to schedule a train, and then build it.. and then manually key in stops, and activities (pickup/dropoff/move).. and THEN you can print a convenient switch-list. After running a train and "processing" it.. the software will indeed store new car locations and status.. and you use that data when building/dispatching the next train.
The program is not hard to use - but the first thing you need to do is upgrade to the latest version, then spend some time reading the manual / docs. Play around with the example layout. Do join the Yahoo group and after you have done the above, ask the questions - we will help .. One of the first things you need to check is that the trains have a place to go, and that the location will accept all the cars you are attempting to send .. if you don't do that, it wont build
JMRI Struggle I want to thank you all for your kind words and advice. I did in fact get the program to build the trains. Now I just need to continue to familiarize myself further with the program. I do think that the main focus and benefit of JMRI is in the decoder applications but this operations system is a nice bonus indeed. Old Fat Robert
