To those who follow Carls Small Layout Scrapbook site, and are wondering why it hasn't been updated, it falls to me to relay this sad news.
I have just had an email from Carls wife and she has asked me to pass on the following message. Carl is under hospice care and is not expected to live very long, which is why there has been no update. I do know that there are several people out there who are interested in hosting the website and continuing his work, but I have no idea how we go about doing that - an email to me chacmool at lineone dot netwould be appreciated if you know what would need to be done, although whether there will be anyone at that end who knows how the site is hosted I know not, and this isn't the time to ask.
I know your thoughts will be with him, but if you want to pass on condolences it would be preferable if you could post on here, rather than inundating his wife with emails
. I will pass them on as either a link that she can read them or as a block
    Thanks
    Jack

I have gotten a lot of small layout space ideas by perusing Carl's site. I hope and pray that Carl will have peace in his final days.

Sorry to learn of this. :tb-sad: I cannot recall if he is a member here?

This is something many folks have probably not considered, the perpetuation of a worthy web site. Hope it can be hosted elsewhere...

This sad and unwelcome news is spreading quickly around the various fora. As I suggested on another, it might be a comfort to both of them to provide them with a link to this thread at some point when a bunch of us have provided some good wishes? His condition is terminal, but his wife will perhaps enjoy coming back at some point to read what people have to say. While he is still with us, she could convey our good wishes and regrets to him.

I am sad to hear this news. I was inspired to build a mini layout because of Mr. Arendt's site and have several friends whose layouts are featured there. Please extend my thanks to him for giving us all the courage to think small.

Carl's website has provided many hours of entertainment and enlightenment to me and I have tried to spread his knowledge to others.

Carl and family are thoughts and prayers are with you.

May his journey be an easy one and all the best to his family in this the toughest of times.

This will be a great loss,to his immediate family and to his extended family of modelers worldwide. Thank you Carl for the many hours of entertainment and the large world of small possibilities you have given to us. Skipp

Yes, please do pass on my sympathies to his family, and prayers for his passage. We never met in person, but emailed. He was always very delightful to communicate with and I had a small contribution in one of his books.

Thank you for posting this information here.

    Love,
    Maureen

This is indeed sad news. Carl's site has been an inspiration to countless model railroaders, myself included. When I realized that a large empire was beyond my capabilities, it was Carl's site that helped me understand that a small model RR can still be a GREAT model RR.

I have spent many hours on Carl's site, and I have never seen any advertising, so I assume Carl has funded it from his own pocket, perhaps from the sales of his books. Keeping the site running in its present state would require paying the hosting fees and domain registration fees, probably a couple of hundred dollars a year. Someone would have to assume responsibility for these ongoing costs and become the administrator of record for the site.

Updating the site and keeping it growing in the way Carl has done would require a big commitment of time. Someone would have to love the site as much as Carl obviously does.

I am another modeler that was inspired by Carl's site. I wish the best for both he and his family. May God be with you all.
