My Alps MD-1000 for some reason tonight will not return the cartridge from the carrier back to the storage slot on the "door". It will pick up the cartridges from slots 1,2,and 3 but not 4. Any idea what may be causing this? It will print but at the end of the printing cycle will cause an error when trying to return the cartridge. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello JDG,

i have the 2010 and i makes the same from time to time.
i take the cartridge from hand out and then i works for a time without problems,
    but this mistake comes back.
problem comes above all if him does not print longer is used
or the cartridge is almost empty.

    greets from germany
    Frank

The problem is that the drivers for the Alps are written in 8-bit MTX. That is a rather old language that is not very friendly outside a DOS enviroment. The trick is Alps is to "do what it takes". Basically....don't expect flawless operation. Oh...I have three Alps printers.

Thing is it seemed like it worked flawless up until last night.

Oh...I should have said...if you disable bi-directional then sometimes this solves Alps problems. The Alps printer is old enough that it is NON-bi-directional.

Then what changed where it is not working? If you cannot figure out what has changed, then do a system restore to two days ago. :)

Nothing has changed on the computer. The printer itself will not pick up and return the cartridges correctly. It prints fine when the correct cartridge is loaded (when it does work from slots 1,2, or 3). It's almost like the head has stripped a gear or something.

One of my MD1000's died that way last year. It made a horrible grinding sound as it dropped the cartridge from the right most slot, and the carriage tried to move.

After that, it would print maybe 1/4 sheet then do the same thing. I just boxed up the printer as dead and cracked open my spare new MD1000, saving the old one for spare parts down the road.

Teah, I had the tractor on one of mine die. I gave it to Skipgear (Tony) and he was able to bring it back from the dead. He might have a suggestion.

I assume that you declined the PDF update and Windows security update that came out a couple days ago then....
