What material do ya''ll recommend for painting a backdrop on? It will be part of a 2.25' x 4' layout, at the moment at least, later it will be expanded with another module. This is going to be a semi permanent layout, only being moved maybe two or three times. I need it to be sturdy, but not that heavy... and relatively cheap in price. Also, the next module will expand the layout into an "L", and i'd like to curve the backdrop around rather than have a square corner where the panels meet.

    Any ideas?

One option is to use a rolling curtain. Vendors often make these to size, they should be very suitable for painting, can be rolled up to move, and easily go around corners. Snap fasteners could be a method to fasten the curtain to your backdrop-supports. Downside is that it will not structurally support the rest of your layout.
