While Sierra Northern GP20s 48 & 50 are getting most of the attention as of late, I caught two of their GP7s in Woodland yesterday.

That's a rare sight these days- an un-chopped GP7. And the paint scheme ain't too shabby, either.

    Where does this railroad operate?

Oakdale,CA to Sonora, Sacramento to Woodland including the port, and the Santa Cruz Branch. They also own the California Western Skunk Train.

Nice shots, John!! Those be my horses...

The #47's exterior isn't chopped but inside the cab she's a not a stock GP-7 any more. The cab sports a newer "standard" AAR control stand complete with 26 air (instead of the older "barrel type" control stand and 24 air that was common on GP-7s). She's also been "turned around" so that the short hood is the front (verses how she was built for the Reading where the long hood was the front).

The #134, on the other hand, has a chopped nose complements of the ATSF. However, inside the cab, she's pretty much a stock GP-7 to include the "barrel type" control stand. She's even got the older style interior cab lights and cab heater motors mounted on the back wall.

Both units run well but the #47 is currently down for traction motor issues...

Good info on the units. Sometimes it's great to read about the history behind the units. Great paint job - you can dress those "old girls" up, can't you?

That paint scheme sure is attention getting. It looks almost like it should glow in the dark as well.

New Paint Scheme For Sierra Northern #48

SERA #48 was returned to Oakdale after the first of this year for major maintenance and replacement of wheels and traction motors. I heard Sierra Northern is thinking of a unique Santa Cruz Division paint scheme, particularly for the future recreational rail operations. You may want to keep your eyes out for SERA #48 with a new and unique paint job.
