Have any of you tried this? I'm thinking two loops that can be used for times I want to do continuous run (when the kids are over) on either end of a shelf type N scale switching layout.

I think it could be done with folding/detachable legs in about a 24" round loop on each end. The tracks could be stored behind the layout when not in use. They could be attached NTRAK module style and it would allow me to take the additional space needed for a return loop off my switching layout and give me my full 26" x 11' space to devote to a modern swithching layout.

I know there are reverse loop wiring issues which I can deal with. Just wanting input on the idea and to see if any of you have utilized concept before or know of someone that has.

As long as you have the space, why not?

NTrak, T-Trak, Z-Trak, etc. do this all the time. You would probably see their modules at a train show where there is continuous running. It is best to plan ahead for space reasons.

Here are a couple of pages from Carl Arendt's site that deal with similar set-ups to what you're describing. Not sure if it's directly applicable to your situation but might be a source of ideas:

I feel it is viable. I expect you are at the "min / max" stage of planning.

    • Minimize - keep it simple with just enough to get it done reliably
    • Maximize - more complicated with long term compatibility to other modules and expansion
I'd say - get it running reliably to test the concept and then decide if it deserves the full treatment.

I'm guessing storage is also an issue at this point. I'm not sure what to suggest other than shelves.
