Where can I find a good railroad job? It would be labor.. I don't really have any certs or anything special.
If you have a certain railroad your interested in, look at thier web site and see if they have an employement section. Thats where they would post openings. You can also check with the Railroad Retirement Board, which lists job openings.
Try "bnsf.com" or "uprr.com". Follow the prompts, you are probably looking for a title something like "career paths" as opposed to "employment". The only jobs that really require "labor" would be Buildings & Bridges, but usually they look for someone who is at least an apprentice tradesman, or Track Dept. in which case an ability in Spanish language would be a benefit. I'm sorry if that sounds racist, but the track dep't. is what it is and usually English IS a second language there. You don't have to have any special certification or licenses to be hired as a conductor or switchman trainee. You will be trained in those crafts and examined at the end(usually) of your "classroom" instruction. With a new law going into effect, if you pass the qualifying exams for conductor, you will also be certified as such. If you do send in a resume, be sure to accentuate your positives, but don't lie about anything or shade it in any color other than it is. I guarantee you that the RR will thoroughly vett you out and they WILL check everything you say for it's veracity. The railroad I was with(BNSF) was the only one of my employers who ever required me to provide written proof of my education and military background since I had included that info on my resume and application. You will be competing for a limited number of jobs from a large pool of potential candidates. You have to attract the attention of the personnel dep't. and if you get to the interview stage you will need to show a positive attitude and a willingness to do the sort of work the railroad requires. If you do get to the interview stage, make sure you are "clean & sober", groomed and clean & neatly dressed.DO NOT wear a T-shirt or similar as an outer garment to ANY interview. If you have had a DUI in the past 10 years, you may not make it past the application stage. If you have had more than one DUI in the past 10 years, dont even bother trying to get a RR job. If you do recreational drugs, get "clean" ASAP and tell your supplier to forget your name, address & telephone number. If you feel you need to smoke or snort every now & then ,forget a railroad career. You will be subject to random drug & alcohol screening now & then(I averaged a "whiz quiz" at least once a year)and I GUARANTEE you will get caught! I know a least a 1/2 dozen railroaders who lost their jobs due to "Rule G" violation during my brief RR career. Keep trying for the jobs. The railroads furloughed a LOT of people during this current economic decline and they are still recalling. They are not really to the point of being short of people for the jobs available. Break a leg! Charlie
Might try unionpacificjobs.com, they seem to be hiring alot here recently. I was just hired for a track maintenance position in Oregon
agreed.. I'll keep you guys updated.. hopefully i get some sort of a interview.. keep your fingers crossed for me.
Thank you! I also just applied at KCS just right now.. I guess this means I'm willing to relocate for how much Ive applied across the US. smile:
Did you try CN?Just had 10 more start on the former EJ&E on Monday. That would be a bit closer to home for you at least. IHB would be another to ask. South Shore as well. rrb.gov is another site you can check. Good luck!
I've tried several times on CN.. They are usually the fastest to deny.. Usually within 3 minutes of submitting my application. Ive sent my resume to IHB and CSS. Just checked rrb.gov the other night.. thats a good resource. Thanks
