The 611 would take a little work to get steamed up again but the 1218 is missing all its boiler tubes and a few piston rods and such things. I doubt the big A will ever run again.
I just think if NS changed their colors to Southern green it would do wonders for that boring black and white scheme, and black is my favorite color!
I'd love to see them do a Nickel Plate, Wabash, & Virginian. And to honor some of the Conrail predecessors an Erie Lackawanna, Pennsylvania, or Lehigh Valley would be pretty cool. But, of course, if you still wanted to go with a black locomotive, I bet the wings of the old Erie would look awesome across the front of a modern widecab.
Russell, Unfortunately that's not exactly true. The last year that the 611 ran, it was running with an extension on her flue time. She would have to undergo a fifteen (?) year inspection to meet the new FRA rules and have all new flues installed. Having grown up in an N&W family and riding behind the J's in regular and excursion service, I'd love nothing more. I was fortunate enough have worked safety on the final scheduled 611 trip up Saluda grade in November 1994.
Allen,,,, that is quite an accomplishment... I have seen Saluda and it amazes me to think of the trains that have traversed it. Harold
You mean something like this? GP59 4610 mated with a QNSL SD40 as trimmer engine power, Brosnan Yard, Macon, GA. Now, if they could repaint one of their remaining SD40-2s into SOU "tuxedo" colors.............. May I humbly recommend a heritage paint scheme NS needs to avoid at all costs? Penn Central black.arghh: And I'm not too crazy about the NS dip-black, either. Perhaps a blue with the old "hamburger" logo..........
Central of Georgia, Blue and Grey scheme with CoG winged emblem on the nose, that is as long as UP hasn't trademarked that as well.
I received an e-mail today about Progress Rail painting some NS 30th Anniversary Heritage units. The first unit is scheduled for April 1. The unit designs selected for build are: Pittsburgh & West Virginia ES44AC Savannah & Atlanta ES44AC Penn Central ES44AC Reading ES44AC Tennessee, Alabama & Georgia ES44AC Erie ES44AC Virginian ES44AC Central of Georgia ES44AC New Haven ES44AC New York Central ES44AC The challenge now is to get color chips of the heritage paint schemes so that the paint needed for these units can be color matched. If anyone can provide some information about obtaining color standards for the colors needed for these units it would be much appreciated. I work for the paint company (PPG) that will be providing the paint for these units. I am not directly involved in this project, but work with the people who will be involved with the color matching and manufacturing of the paint for these units. Scott
NS swallowed up most of Conrail. CSX got the rest. CSX & NS own Conrail Shared Assets(at least they did. I think they still do)here in NJ.
Yeah I know about that, but all that is relatively recent and (at least to me) not as much part of NS direct roots as, say N&W, SOU, etc.
I'm disappointed that Pennsy wasn't included. By spy photo, do you mean something like: This is the first clear coated unit made at the Progress Rail plant in Muncie. The information that came with this photo indicated this would be a show unit. I got this picture about 10 days ago.
Looks cool. Will be interesting to see what they all look like. Not a an NS fan due to being out west but still intriguing none the less. The UP started something. Will be interested if any of the other railroads do the same.
