I am including a photo of a wreck of the Atlantic Coast Line. The number on the engine is barely visible but it appears to be #1528. Where was this accident and when?
sofasurfer- Welcome to TrainBoard! You might try searching the DOT on-line accident records; http://ntl1.specialcollection.net/scripts/ws.dll?websearch&site=dot_railroads Might be a somewhat tedious task, but... Boxcab E50
According to ACL's roster you can confine your search prior to 12/21/51 when engine #1528 was removed from their roster and sent to scrap. 1528 was ACL's class P-5A, their standard Pacific for passenger service (1500-1569) built by Brooks as their shop #61259. All of these engines went to scrap between 1949-1952 except for #1504 which last I heard was preserved at Jacksonville, FL.
The white stripe and script herald lettering scheme for ACL steam locomotives was implemented in 1940. The twin white stripe lettering scheme shown on the head-end car was adopted by the ACL in 1946. As noted in another reply the locomotive was scrapped in 1951 - so the derailment shown in the photograph had to occur between 1946 and 1951. A quick online review of the ICC wreck files for the years 1946 to 1951 did not reveal any references to ACL P-5a No. 1528. I seem to recall reading that accidents were not recorded unless there were serious injuries/deaths so if this is a "simple" derailment the incident may not exist in the ICC Accident Reports. Buddy - Thanks for that information. I was not aware that there was no ICC report if there were no fatalities. That would explain why I've never been able o find any info on the passenger train wreck at Ulmers, S.C. in 1964, nor the wreck at Hollywood/Meggett, S.C. in the early 60's - both on the SAL.
I'm in the same situation regarding a 1957 derailment on the ACL at Johns Island, SC. I was told the derailment resulted from a hotbox/failed journal. The wreck reportedly forced the Champion to turn around on the wye at Ravenel, SC and return to Yemassee where it was then routed over the C&WC to Coosaw SC. The Champion ran over the SAL EC line from Coosaw to Charleston where it returned to home rails. Interesting - I do not recall hearing about the SAL-Hollywood/Meggett SC wreck. Do you have any other details? Approximate month or year?
Buddy - To the best of my knowledge it was in the early 1960's. In those days color photos in the newspaper were rare but I definitely recall an aerial photo of several of SAL's "Green Hornet" cars on their side, in color on the front page of the paper. A friend who visited the wreck said that several of the boxcars were loaded with Ballentine Ale. I never took the opportunity myself to visit said wreck site.
