The only thing I accomplished this week was painting the plaster in the Spadra area.

That is a shot of Extra 616 west (grain empties) pulling into Spadra to meet KL (Kansas City - North Little Rock). At least the brown eliminates the stark white of the plaster. When I get everything covered, I will start adding ground cover and trees. More pics are in my album (linked below).

    Oh...I almost forgot...Go Steelers!

    Looks good.

Don't say "only" as I have had one of these layout parties when I didn't get anything done. Glad you are working on your empire.

I don't recall if it was on my list for the party but the "almost complete" track plan of the "Grey and Grandure" is ready:
Grey and Grandure including future expansions:
The area where the existing and expansion will connect will be "tightened" up when I have a better idea of the window blinds. Those windows are nine feet across and will be reflected in future plans.

For those who are wondering this was done in MS Paint that comes with Windows. While XtraCad would be more accurate and faster there is something about Paint that just plain works for me.

    Mud Creek Beltline

    Howdy Folks,
I'm a little late to the party, But I have recently (two weeks ago) began work on the Mud Creek Beltline (MCBX) which is a 2'X4' N scale layout. Track work is progressing nicely, I have been working on the grade, and making decisions where the industries will be located.
Progress photos, etc. can be found here: Mud Creek Beltline. It has a shape grade about 4% or so from what I can figure.
This week I am planning on adding the "Mud Creek Yard to the layout which is a 12"X56" long addition which will mate up with the upper level of the layout.
Check it out, enjoy, and make suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Mark+

Got a little more painting on the backdrop done this week. So far I am fairly happy with it, but time will tell once I get some scenery going. I hope it won't be too distracting.

I also started on a bit of terrain. I am quite pleased with how that is turning out so far. I am happy to see that so far, the terrain looks like it will be 'to scale', without any crazy undisguisable slopes or drop-offs because things are too crowded.

Anyhow, thats all for me. Hopefully I will be back next week with another update.

    Cheers,

I'm back, but have no progress to report since last Friday, the 28th. First, a plumbing project distracted me, then I had to make an emergency trip back to Ohio due to a death in the family. Has not been a good 10 days.... 23 hours driving through a blizzard, loss of a brother, and now catching up on a week's worth of work.

Thanks for the thoughts everybody... I finally made some progress tonight. The permanent front wall of the produce warehouse is done. The doors are framed, and the wall is attached to the floor. If I can get some momentum behind me, I might get the removable end wall finished up this weekend.

    Walls sanded and primed.

Next is sky blue ,then ground color and first layer of texture.( hopefully tommorow! ) After some operation, I ended up re-doing the interchange to be more prototypical and added a passing north of Cameron for easier operation.(not prototypical).
Still lots to do, I really need to get a move on!

    Good job, all!!

    Last installment for me

My goals at the Meridian industrial park haven't materialized yet. The end of the Winter Layout Party will come before I can make any more progress there. But results achieved at Dixon have been very satisfying.

While organizing my kitbashing parts into a new cabinet this evening, I discovered a few DPM wall sections that begged to become additional flats at Dixon.

    Here's the before shot:

    And here's the after shot:

The pictures don't fully show how much depth just a few more flats give to the scene.

Well, Dave, thanks for having us all over for the Winter Layout Party. I had a great time. Uhh, can I get my coat? Yeah, that's the one. Thanks again, Dave. See you next year.

It's been a couple of weeks since I posted about work on my layout. Last weekend I fit the foamboard road into place and got the lane stripes on it. This weekend I secured it in place.
This pic shows the lane stripes plus the backdrop picture of Big O's Diner, which is directly across Adams Street from Great Plains Propane. The pic of Big O's Diner and all the other business on the backdrop are from Google Maps street level views of Adams Street businesses directly across the street from Great Plains Propane, Heller Tin Compress, and Smith-Scharff Paper. I took this photo after I painted the area where GP Propane buildings will go, but before I taped some of the building pieces together and temporarily put it in place.

I continued to fine tune the backdrop pictures and backdrop trees, plus I added trees along Adams Street in front of Heller Tin Compress and Smith Scharff Paper.

This pic shows Heller Tin Compress from the South East.
The small gray shed is glued, but the main building is only taped together to give me a chance to see what will fit where when it's done. The fence is a cardboard mock up representing the corrugated sheet metal panels that surrounded Heller Tin Compress in the 1970s. Eventually, I'll put in a plastic version. Other details in the scrap yard will include a scale in the driveway next to the main building, an overhead crane by the gray shed for loading/unloading scrap and baled/bundled scrap, scrap piles and some details around the buildings.

The blue building in this picture of the Smith-Scharff Paper complex is temporarily "on loan" from another business on the layout. Eventually, all of the S-S Paper buildings will be brown, like the one temporarily taped together.

For the final week of the Layout Party, I'll put in the chain link fence around the Great Plains Propane buildings and yard.
I've got to figure out a better way to make all of the medium sized and small sized tanks that are in the Propane yard. I think I'll use wooden dowels carved, sanded and painted to look like tanks. (The kits that I ordered have been on back order since November. GRRR)

I'm late to the party, but I have pictures that show the progress from the start. The first picture was taken January 14, 2011, but it shows the state of the layout when the party began or not too long thereafter.

The second picture was taken on the 19th of January when the major foam work was done and the sculptamold application was about half done.

The third and fourth pictures show the progress from January 26th after several coats of paint (base of brown to a lighter highlight color) were applied over the finished sculptamold... to February 2, 2011, when more culverts and other details were largely completed. The last picture shows the project at this time with most of the scenic details and ballasting done.

I might add that during this time I also completed the building of at least 3 of the structures that you can see on the layout. For more pictures of the process you can look at my photo albums on my Facebook page... link in my signature.

And here the last pictures from my projects. All four modules are incorporated in the layout. More pictures.

Like you see, the three curved modules are finished and my module Salina has some scenery. I have still to build houses - but that's another part.

    GD&R Update

The party is almost over and it is time for me to go home. Oh I am home and I'm having fun.

When I decide to join the party I had a list of items that I wanted to complete. It was a fairly large list for me since I had recently started doing any kind of scenery work. You may recall that my list was as follows:

    1. Finish weathering all the rails in that area. This includes the section of track that is hidden by the foam block.
    2. Ballast the entire section of track in that area. This too includes the section of track that is hidden by the foam block. I have a history of changing my mind all the time. Next month that foam block may be in the garage.
    3. Build and detail the portion of the city that will be located there. Most of the buildings are already assembled.
    4. Work at finishing the chemical plant area (customer #4).Place the storage tanks
      1. Overflow containment wall around storage tanks
      2. Road into and within the area
      3. Add a chain link fence.
    5. Work towards finishing the Scrap Yard area (customer #9).
      1. Ramp for loader so it reaches over Gondolas
      2. Maybe some junk yard dogs.
      3. Add recycling bins (have them to build)
      4. Some type of fence could be a wood wall or chain link or a combination
After I posted the list I began to think that maybe I had bit off more then I could chew. For the last month or so I have been working slowly and quietly, so I’ll let you be the judge.

EDIT: I messed up again. I uploaded this page out order. This should be the last one.

I have to admit that if I had not joined the party, I would not have got any of this work done. The only thing on my list that I did not do was to make a ramp in the scrap yard. After I ballasted the area I decided that I did not want the ramp and was not sure if I had the room for it.

I have more ideas for the area, and will get to them some day. I have other project that got put on hold while at the party, and I need to work on some of them.

I have enjoyed looking at the work that the rest of you have done and I have some new projects to do because of you. You all have inspired me to move on and on and on.

Thanks for looking at my photos.
