    Hello,

I had a question about the CB&Q main line through Iowa. (I'm posting here since the Q board doesn't seem to get a lot of traffic-hope that's OK). I had thought this line was all double track, but the Iowa DOT highway map shows that there are stretches of single track in western Iowa. My question is this: did this line always have these single-track stretches, or was the line originally double track, and these stretches were later single-tracked with CTC?

    TIA,

    Badger

I think thats the way it always was.I would have suspected if not BNSF would have put it back in years ago. the amount of coal coming across there, plus its a bottlenexk for Amtrak.BUt I never worked past Creston so i couldnt tell you. Those Lincoln guys hated us Burg guys so never really asked lol.

I'm gonna have to agree with "Fireball". I was qualified only as far as Creston myself when I worked out of G'burg!

I belive that west of Creston it was double track. ROW is double wide, bridges are double wide as well.

Badger, look for more activity on the "Q" forum soon. Can you give me an example of some towns in western Iowa in which your question revolves? The main bridge that crosses the Mississippi is twin trackage and most of the pictures I find of the CB&Q in Iowa have two sets of tracks. That alone doesn't tell me that it was a dual main as some of these mains had long sideings to use for helper service back in the days of steam.

Let me know some of the towns and I can look it up as I have many books on the Q.

    Jim
