I apologize if this has been covered but I would like to have the benefit of the board's collective experience and wisdom. I have seen photos and diagrams with the throw guide on both sides of the turnout and in some cases trimmed with only the guideline on the side of the hand throw/switch machine contact. Any suggestions on the pros and cons? I would like to trim it as it would clean up the space on the the opposite side. Thoughts?

In most cases mainline railroading the switch stand is on the straight side of the switch. But it seems in my model railroads world I have them on both, as space dictates. However cuz I model in G scale, clearance is always an issue with equipment that swings wide. So I made a gauge to measure from the side of the rail head to the mimumum distance from the rail in witch obstacles may be placed. This accounts for switch stands / machines and sings, signals. Also note that I have a different gauge for curves and straights as well.

You can trim them without worry. I do when space is tight, and there is no operational difference.
