Eight NEW 20' containers schemes are now available from Arnold and four - 40' container schemes. Arnold 1/160scale. Part of their European line. Containers have printing on the TOPS and nice door detail printing as well. I took some (amateur) photos .... that don't do them justice.... N SCALE INTERMODAL MODELS +GKr0Jsxxyj+NBOUtrXjZ PS- They also have 'pins' on the bottom that lock into the tops, of Arnold containers.
How do these compare to the DI boxes and/or the real thing? Do they scale out pretty good? They seem a little squashed to me but it might just be the photo. Definitely some schemes of interest.
I would say that the Arnold containers are both considered Standard Height [ISO 668 before amed. of 1988 ?]. The ARNOLD 20' containers: I measure them out at 20'x8'x8' [exterior]with my metal MASCOT rule. I checked 'pins' on the KATO, ARNOLD and a Minitrix tank container and NONE of them match each other. I could force the Arnold 20' and Minitrix 20' together. The KATO 'pins' are too 'wide; for both of the 20's and the Arnold 40. The Walthers 40' Hi-cube container pins will fit on top of the Arnold 40 footer (or 2-20's), however the Arnold 40' pins do not fit atop the Walthers 40' hi-cube. The Walthers 48' and the KATO 53 seem to match 'pin' locations. I have SIX brands of 20' containers handy plus the minitrix tank container. They all have matching measurements [8x8x20], except the Deluxe - which is a hair taller, and the Micro-Trains, which is a hair wider - Not to say that any of them are incorrect...Standard heights are- 8' , 8'6" to 9'6" hi-cubes. Brands are; [Roco; Model Power, Deluxe, Arnold, Wiking & Micro-trains] I'll take some photos this week for comparison and post. They all seem to measure out well and look good together, some being older styles than others. All six are different styles. The deluxe #3031 measures out to 8'6" high, still a standard height container. Here's a photo of an Arnold 40' and a deluxe 40' (my camera causes the 'curve'): Again the Arnold container measures 40'x8'x8' [exterior] The Deluxe container measures 8'6" high. They appear to be the exact same width and length. Because of the 'pin' on the bottom of the Arnold, when sitting side by side they are the same height. [same for the 20's]. The style of the Arnold container has a pronounced Frame along the bottom and that seems to make it seem a little 'different', however some quick checks of international container photo sites show just how much variety is in the prototype world - and how many prototypes that we do not have models of in N scale ! Here's some info from the Internet: "Except in highly specialized trades, cargo containers generally conform to US and international standards that have been developed by the American National Standards Institute and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) respectively. The size standards for outer dimensions of shipping containers are 20' or 40' length, 8' width, and 8' or 8'6" in height. To increase revenues, "high cube" containers with heights of 9'6" have come into common use. Fortunately, most containerships can carry containers of mixed heights without significant difficulty. Depending on cargo density, a standard 20' container can carry up to 15-20 short tons (STs) or 29 measurement tons (MT) (MT of 40 cubic feet) of cargo. The abbreviation TEU means Twenty-feet Equivalent Units. The other size is the forty-feet container, Forty-feet Equivalent Unit (FEU) and can be loaded with up to 30 tons of cargo. Containerships generally carry a mix of 20' and 40' containers, and some are fitted for deck stowage of 45' and 48' lengths." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Arnold 40 footer pins perfectly on top of two Arnold 20's, and with this variety of schemes, I'll run mine that way in double stack service. They fit nicely on the Micro-Trains 89' flat as well. I think that these are very nice 1/160th container models, beautifully decorated. Recommended. Steven
The Deluxe 40' wrinkle should be a standard height 8'6" can. The Deluxe 40' Hi-Cube (all corrugated) should be a 9'6" can. A standard height all corrugated can is a nice development though - I know Jagged Ben wants some
