Does anyone have any photos of a ballasted trestle or viaduct? I am working on an idea to model a concrete trestle or viaduct, on concrete piles, with a ballasted deck and I need a couple of photos to show in the presentation of my idea to the club. I went through page after page of images on google, I found some good images of the piles and underneath the trestle, but did not find anything showing the ballasted deck. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I have seen two or three. The bridge is constructed out of concrete piles and a concrete deck...then it is ballasted and the track laid just like it was on the ground. I have been told that it is cost effective because there is no special track maintenance...ties and rail can be replaced by the same crew and machines that repair the rest of the line.
I have close up pictures of a ballasted steel girder bridge. If that helps, I can post them. From the top, it looks the same as a concrete deck. I have seen ballasted concrete trestles but no pics. The one that comes to mind is on the old Rio Grande at Tolland, crossing Boulder creek. Mike
The Milwaukee Road did this quite frequently, you might want to Google the railroad or search the fallen flag thread here. EDIT: Follow Hemis excellent thread here for pictures of the Northern Montana Division several pictures of bridges with ballasted decks.
Very true. They did ballasted decks on wood pile, steel, concrete. The steel had sectional concrete troughs which fit into their upper framework. I seem to recall some pictures in a topic about KCS re-building the old Macaroni Line. Might look in the KCS forum and see if my memory is correct? Boxcab E50
These photos were taken by one of my clubmates Steve B. who built this bridge quite accurately. If this is what you are looking for and need more I will see if he has more.
There is one on the UP Clinton Sub at the Cedar River and another one is the rebuilt CRANDIC Bridge. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_CXF5WqwPWlc/THWA8La1pOI/AAAAAAAALug/SDkc1Moc1mg/s1600/100_7427.JPG
This is the Orange Line rapid transit("L") in Chicago. It is on an elevated structure for most of it's route and some of that is on unused steam railroad R.O.W. The end terminal at Chicago's Midway Airport is actually below grade. world.nycsubway.org/United States/Chicago, Illinois/CTA Orange Line Charlie
