Does anyone have any idea why and how this area on the NMD became to called the "Amphitheater"? I was looking at some pictures of the daylighted tunnel, and the name Amphitheater IV was cast into the tunnel face. Just curious....
I'm not sure how the name came about, but the view from the east portal of Amphitheatre Tunnel 4 is pretty nice:
It's got to be a geographical reference. Something about the surrounding terrain reminded that person who attached its name...? Boxcab E50
Hemi-Of course it was your pictures I was viewing when the question came to mind. :tb-wink: Ken- I had assumed the same thing, as Hemi's pictures reflect, it's quite an area. Hopefully I can visit it in person some day, I know it wouldn't be possible, but wouldn't it be fun to ride an ATV on the ROW from Great Falls to Geraldine?
If you could get a smooth enough ride, having a video camera mounted on the handle bars... You might almost get a slight feel as though aboard motive power traversing the line. It would still give a good impression of how things were, too long ago. :tb-sad: Boxcab E50
I grew up on the Northern Montana Line. Knew a number of folks who worked for the Milwaukee. Wish I was still in touch with those folks. Sorry, I don't know the exact reason for naming either. I think Ken is on the right track... no pun intended.
