The 36A was laid to rest Friday in Deer Lodge MT. A sad fate for such a beauty!

Guess I need to make a journey down that way. Too warm for me right now, so will wait a few weeks and hope for days in the sixties.

I see it still has the MRL sublettering. Hopefully it'll be removed before going on display. If it's going to be stuffed and mounted it should at least look as it should.

I agree Terry. The MRL could be made smaller if not removed. Ken, when you do make the trip give her a kiss for me. I spent a few nights in the cab of that loco at Bensnville! Can't afford the trip right now so a kiss by proxy is in order!

Looks great to me, in my view, instead of complaining about some small detail, be thankful that MRL paid the $$$ to donate and moved it to Deer Lodge. Too often, too late we hear about things being scrapped after the fact, just be happy for what you get. Being stuffed and mounted is better that being turned into a washing machine.

But that's just my realistic opinion, take it or leave it.

I'm just thankful it's made this long journey thru time over the years, and she's still with us. One more reason to get back there, starting to be like a Milwaukee museum!!:teeth:

Yeah, a #%#$@!!! Chinese washing machine, no less. If I was going to kvetch it would be about the whole primer gray/mustard yellow (drop dead, UP fans) paint job. But, until I can pay for the proper paint job it looks good for now. Thanks to MRL for doing the work.

Unfortunately, those colors were the only ones 36A ever wore.

I wouldn't give up hope of ever seeing it run again. We've all seen stuffed and mounted locos moved and restored to operation many times. Such is still possible here.

It was built in 1961 so it's very likely that the first paint job it had was this UP color scheme. To paint it maroon and orange or whatever would be historically inaccurate.

I hear you on the scheme, however. It's not my favorite one, either, which is why for my passenger modeling I am mostly sticking with pre-UP repaint.

BUT, if I am ever going to model the City of Portland train it will pretty much have to be armour yellow and gray to be accurate.

I am thankful to MRL for going to the work of keeping this from the scrapper's torch. That would have been more expedient for them and may have netted them some more $$$, but they chose a form of preservation at least.

UP's E-9s all have more modern power and controls stuffed inside. While I know it offends the most purist of approaches, it might be one viable option for the eventual return of 36-A to running condition.

Hey Guys, the caboose looks great too!. It does look like Deer Lodge is becoming the unofficial official MILW Road in Montana museum. Good Job whomever is responsible for making the phone calls. Being along I-90, between Butte and Missoula, easy access from interstate, good location. Props to the folks who painted the Harlow depot as well.

    Dear Adam,

    Thanks for those details!

If being historically inaccurate gets rid of mustard yellow, than I am all for it. Must be being a 70's child, and all that harvest yellow appliances, paint and clothes I saw that burned my retinas. I still have hard time getting the vision of Tom Watson's mustard yellow pants from the '77 Masters out of my memory banks.

Sounds like Alot of the hard work has been done, according to the note was with her pictures. Now what she needs is someone to take care of her, until she can be possibly returned to restored sevice.

I have seen it all too often. A piece of equipment with historical significance is preserved and donated, then languishes outdoors, exposed to the elements, left to molder into the ground.
Depending on the powers that be at Deer Lodge, maybe an annual outing every April with buckets, soap, and brushes, along with a coat of wax, will keep 36A looking good for many years.

Mustard yellow!! UGH! Our kitchen table ( 1977) was that disgusting color! I agree it wouldnt be accurate but hey 3985 was dressed as a Clinchfield engine. So why not paint her whatever for a few years then the "original" paint.IIRC IRM in Union was asking what color an ex Rock Island GP 7 should wear and they took a vote by donation. Surprising enough it looks like the Blue and White won! So there is a thought to use.
