UP 9871 (Ex/DRGW 5401) A SD40T-2 scheduled to be auctioned at Burnham on July 14th was pulled from the lines during the final hours! Apparently the gracious Union Pacific is to donated the unit to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden Colorado. Not only does this unit look great in its original paint, with the great team of restoration experts at the CRRM, we can expect her to be looking great someday (soon?) Glad it won't be tagged up and then sent overseas as scrap and then marketed back to us as well something that is one of my favorite words and rimes with scrap also!!!
Conductor sick! This is still great news, but i must point out, that thanks to its service in the lovely state of California, it returned with the conductors side completely graffiti'd. Take a look here. ColoradoRailfan.com Photo Gallery
Yep, that happened in July 07' when she was the UP 8594. It hung around Tucson quite a bit that year after life on the dirt train ended. I got a pic of it in early July that year, http://mrlxhelper.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1230164 It made its way to West Colton on either the MTUWC or a work train and came back to Tucson a little over a week later with "bike yeah" on the side. I had the privilege of taking it to Lordsburg, NM. on the MTUFW the day after it returned with its new unwanted markings. After dropping it off in Lordsburg, the Lordsburg Local used it for a while, http://mrlxhelper.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1230168 and then it seemed to disappear from the area.
At least it won't be scrapped. That's good news! And I'm not even a bigtime Rio Grande fan......... I must be getting old when I start seeing 645-powered diesels winding up as museum pieces- used to be I was concerned about GP7s, F-units, and Alcos being saved.:tb-wink:
Or, the torches and welders that have done this to many tunnel motors ex-DRGW 5360 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=524557
would be a great sight to see a restored GP30 and SD40-2T in front of the turntable in Golden. Did thes guys already make any progress with their GP30? Its condition did not look good in May 2006.
There are some fairly new pics of the GP30 over on Railpitures.net, looks like its just setting for now...a future project.
Wow, that's one big front porch! You could put up an umbrella, get a few chairs, a cooler full of beer and have yourself a party on that deck!
The 3011, the GP30 at CRRM has not changed. It's still in sad shape. I've got a few recent photos. I'll see if I can get them loaded.
It, and the C988, the Coors SW-8? were moved the same day. Don't recall how long ago. A couple of years at a minimum! Will see if I can find that info and post.
