Does anyone have any sort of documentary evidence of the percentage of "Our Company" refrigerator/ventilator cars used to carry southeastern produce north to market? At present I'm going by my admittedly not so great 40+ year memory and as many period photos as I can find to support said memories. That being said, does anyone have memories or other proof that any cars other than FGEX, WFEX, BREX, and associated "Our Company" cars were used in the transport of perishables from southeastern packing sheds. This is for operations on my ho gauge layout and at present I have about 5 FGEX reefers for each WFEX and BREX; 20 FGEX, 2 WFEX, and 3 BREX.
Dave, For modeling the proper ratio of FGEX/WFEX/BREX reefers see page 6 of: http://s-clmodeler.aclsal.org/currentissue/fgexwoodencars.pdf Regarding the use of other company reefers in the southeast - not uncommon to see PFE, ART, SFRD, MDT, NP, etc. sprinkled among the FGEX/WFEX/BREX cars - especially in the period right after WWII. You should check the archives of the Steam Era Freight Car Yahoogroup Site - pretty certain this topic has been discussed there. Buddy Hil
Buddy - Thanks a bunch. Looks like I've got some very interesting research in hand. Again, thanks. Dave
Thanks PalmettoLTD Additional proof that members of this forum are just about the greatest! I had used every combination that I could think of and still can't access the information Buddy Hill sent to me (see his reply). This information more or less confirms my memories of perishable movements over the SAL during the 1950's - 60's. I just do not recall reefers of other companies being involved in this traffic, but then again, I'm quite certain I didn't see all of it either. In any case it's an excuse to buy more reefers (and other cars) and that's always welcome.
