I'm asking because it seems that I have about 7 "groups" of roadnames - of which BN (my main roadname) is one. So just curious what percentage of your fleet (locos & rolling stock) is your primary/favorite roadname. Include merger lines as a single name (in my case SP&S, GN, NP, and CB&Q and BNSF would count as one)

I voted 75-100% as most of my locomotives will be lettered for my AWRR, but I may allow the odd visitor from adjacent roads (when I decide just where the layout is situated)

When I get my layout built it will look like the output from the Frisco paint shop. [IMG]

When I did the math I was surprised that my SLSF percentage wasn't more - apparently some SP stuff taking up a considerable amount of storage! (between PA/B sets, GS4, and miscellaneous GPs and SDs)

    SLSF still dominates tho. ;)

Probably close to 30% is Milwaukee Road. Between that company, and the NP, they make up 40-50% of my freight car fleet.

Originally I was all UP but as my modelling has become more experienced I have slowly changed to UP fallen flags with mainly MOPAC, Rio Grande and SP, I still have a couple of UP but they are diminishing lol. Oh I also have couple of BNSF and MRL.

I've noticed this for awhile, too; almost all my power is MoPac, and a lot of the variety in the cars comes from either TTX or DODX. Although MDC (ex-MDC?) is starting to let me get some variety in the boxes.

My initial thought was to keep it all PRR in 1930's to early 50's. I found a HUGE desire for steam and am happy I made that choice. All that being said, I started with all Pennsy but have realized there were connecting roads and other trains passing through. I now have two B&O, one NYC, one Erie, one Missouri Pacific (to be scraped and made into Pennsy, three unlettered (I have decals but not yet the cajones) and eight Pennsies.

    Hey,
I've got about 80% EL :D .The rest are spin offs of the EL. Conrail,NS,NJT,CSX,Slamtrak.
I do have 6 ATSF/BNSF engines, just because I like the colors. 1 UP SD-90 showes up on my layout once year. [IMG]

I looked at the results of the poll with disbelief. I find it hard to believe that over a third of the modelers have over 75 percent of their freight car fleet all in the same roadname. Sure, if you're modeling the PRR, like I do, almost all your locomotives will be home road. But your freight cars, too? On the prototype, it's usually half home and half foreign at best.

Schitzophrenic would be the best way to describe my collection.

I had a thing for CB&Q for a while so I have lots of CB&Q motive power and passanger cars. Perhaps 30% or more of my loco's being CB&Q, but that is changing. Rock Island and N&W, GM&O, is what comprises the rest of my motive power so as to have little bit of each railroad that ran through illinois from the fifties to the seventies. The end goal for me is to be able to field a variety of lines because I miss the old days of colorful diesels and cars from all over the country. Not prototype to mix and match but hey I like the paint schemes.

I also have some modern CSX. Four factory painted deisels. It's a nice paint scheme so I caught the bug for modern for a bit, till I realized that modern CSX meant huge unit trains and at the time nonexistent autoracks.

Oops! I was thinking only of locomotives when I voted [IMG] My locomotives will be as stated, but freightcars will be much less home road, maybe only 20-25%.

I was thinking the same thing! My freight car fleet is much more varied. Probably freight cars would be the 50-75% group. :D

Since I model SP&S in the 50s I have a little different mix than if I was modeling BN. Locomotives as follows. SP&S 50%, GN 25%, NP 5% Logging Lines and Private Roads 20%. Of those 60% are steam power.

Freight equipment has a mix of 10% SP&S, 25 % GN, 15% NP. 30% are other roads including eastern lines. The remaining 20% is made up of logging and private line, and M of W equipment. All this is based on an inventory of around 700 pieces of freight rolling stock.

Passenger equipment has a mix of 15% SP&S, 40% GN, 30% NP, and 1 % CB&Q. 14% is made up of logging and private line. Self propelled cars are included in that count.

Thinking about percentages of cars reminds me of the unique makeup of my mainline passenger runs. Power is SP&S, and then 40% GN, 40% NP, and the remaining 20% is SP&S, and CB&Q in GN or NP colors. Only the headend equipment, one coach, diner, and the lounge/obs. is in SP&S. I have SP&S E-7 #750 in both paint schemes of GN EB colors, and SP&S green and maroon, with gold stripes. The motive power mix can be stirred up a little with an E-7/F-3 combo or an Alco RS-2 pinch hitting as the 2nd unit or third unit if needed. Two heater cars are available to be thrown in the mix.

Local passenger runs on the SP&S are the only runs with pure SP&S equipment. Usually a single F-3 or F-7, or a Pacific as backup. Occassionaly the sole Atlantic on the roster will see passenger duties, normaly it is in freight service.

To be added will be a GN local passenger using all GN Heavyweight equipment and pulled by a Pacific.

Currently my passenger power consists of 2 sets, A-B-A, of NP F-3s and F-7s, 2 4-8-4s including NP 2626, 2 sets of GN Fs again in A-B-A configuration.

One each of SP&S, NP, and GN gas electrics.

SP&S power consists of 6 F units, all A units, in either F-3 or F-7 series, two dual service RS units, and one dual service GP-9, a lone E-7 in two paint schemes completes the diesel roster. One 4-8-4, two 4-6-2s, and one 4-4-2 complete the steam, availble as backup passenger power.

A lot is also going to depend on era and type of equipment. As a for example, I'm in the process of building a coal train, so I end up with a lot of MoPac hoppers, and this tends to skew the percentages. For the rest of the freight cars, there is a good bit of variety, but still a heavy lean towards MP and subsidiary roads.

I'm in the 25-50% range made up of BNSF...I'd guess around 35-40% but I can get an exact number once I look at my roster sheet. A rough breakdown off the top of my head...
    ~30 BN/ATSF/BNSF locomotives
    ~40 BN/BNSF Coal Gons
    ~20 BN/ATSF Box Cars
    ~25 BN/ATSF Covered Hoppers
    4 BN Centerbeam Cars
    1 BN Caboose
~30 Misc BN/ATSF/BNSF Cars, including mill gons, skybox flats, MOW, intermodal, etc.
