Something else related to trains and volcanoes. The land that came to include the summit crater was once owned by the Burlington Northern.

Yeah, I knew that, it's my favorite story. Burlington Northern Via NP owned Mt St. Helens. When the Volcano blew, the Federal Government did a land swap for forest service land elsewhere and turned it into a national monument.

If you drive to the observatory today you drive past a number of groves of confirs planted by Weyerhauser with post eruption dates. All of that land was former land grant land from Northern Pacific.

Two to three hundred square miles is a big place.

Late coming into this thread...I just found it this morning.

The flanger is standard gauged, and it is former McCloud River #1773, built in the McCloud car shop in 1923.

Equipment Rolling Stock Details - MR Flanger #1773

One correction to what John says- McCloud did have an extensive narrow gauge (roughly 28") that worked inside the McCloud mill. They did have some snow removal equipment for it, namely one or more wedge plows and a couple home built rotaries. Horses were the original motive power, later replaced by battery locomotives and then diesel and gas mechanicals of Vulcan, Plymouth, and Baldwin construction.
