Georgetown Loop Gets New Diesel Engine Reporting Stan Bush SILVERPLUME, Colo. (CBS4) ― The backup engine for the Georgetown Loop arrives in Colorado. Workers at the Georgetown Loop are excited over the arrival of their new locomotive. It could keep the railroad from shutting down in tough times. "We need another back-up locomotive, another diesel locomotive," said Georgetown Loop Railroad spokesman Mark Graybill. "It's an early 1950s GE center cab locomotive. It's one of the few narrow-gauge diesels still in existence." The engine arrived in Silverplume over Vail Pass and through the Eisenhower Tunnel from California. The Georgetown Loop has worked for two years to get their steam program back on track. Diesel engines took over in that time. That showed the railroad how vulnerable they were using only one engine from the 1940s. "Locomotives, especially older locomotives, break down so you need to have something in backup service," said Graybill. The Georgetown Loop Railroad will begin its trips for the season next month. ------------------------------------ From speculation, this appears to be ex Roaring Camp & Big Trees #60.

Durango and Silverton has one too, has had it since 2002. Except I read somewhere that it's not a 44-ton, but a 45-ton based on the 44-ton design. It came in pretty handy the year of the fires.
We used to love riding the Georgetown Loop when they had the steamers. When wife and I stayed in Denver we always checked on the steam availability. Right on about the echo!
