I'm fighting a detached retina in my right eye. I'm not sure how it's going to work out yet but right now although I can see out of right eye it currently filled with oil to hold the retina in place as it heals. I have lost my depth perception, and need to close my right eye to avoid double images. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with vision in only one eye and things they may done to improve working with small details. Thanks, Bruce
I had to wear a patch for awhile with a similar experience. Now I have to deal with diabetic vision. Be patient time will heal or you will adapt.
Hi, Bruce! Sorry to hear of the problem. I woke up one morning, about 25 years ago, to find itching and blurred vision in the left eye. I thought it might be the onset of that season's hayfever, or I might need to change my glasses. I went to the optician. He sent me to my GP, who had a look at it and sent me to the local Eye Hospital. I had what was described as the optical equivalent of a stroke. It's slightly better now but it's unlikely to be cured. One of my former workmates had a detached retina. I'm not sure what caused it but I think it was self inflicted - he was at an airshow, and looking skyward. He did get it sorted and I imagine the use of the oil is part of the cure. My workmate used an eyepatch for a while, as Rick is suggesting. Working on small details? I use an optivisor. Regards, Pete
Bruce, If it was treated quickly, it should heal, although you might not regain full acuity. A number of my friends have suffered a detached retina; I would guess that all regained at least 75% of previous vision, enough that it does not bother them. There is also some depth perception with only one eye, due to visual "clues" like size and perspective.
Bruce, perhaps a magnifying work lamp would help in the interim. What I'm referring to is a circular flourescent lamp with a 4-6" magnifying lens in the center. Thanks guys. I'm looking at the work lamp for the workbench. I found out until I get something in place I'll not be putting any springs on my KD5's. I see the doc on Friday, I'll know more then. Bruce
This should be short term and you will only need to compensate until it is healed. My brother in law had one, didn't follow orders and had it detach again. Long term result? He had an extra 2 weeks of doing the stuff you have to do while healing the detachment. Find short term solutions, like a magniflying something or just take the dog for a walk, spring is coming, give the trains a break for a week.
