I hear you, that is why I am up to 3 and possibly 4 layouts. Though I must confess, two of them are really Ntrak clubs......

Now THERE'S an idea!!! The WP stuff for home and the modern UP stuff for an NTRAK module. Oh the possibilities. Now to find room to store a module..... Guess I'll need to leave werk early today!

    I like my L&N:

The bad thing is I know of at least 5-6 more engines out there right now that I'd love to get. I know there's one more GP30 I don't have, plus three new numbers of the C420.

Collecting them while waiting to start on a layout can kinda be addicting.

I kmow your pain. I started with a simple loop of Unitrak. Started getting locos for the some day layout. I got so busy for many years the I went to the train shop to relax and de-stress. Before I knew it, I had 400 locomotives and still no layout. And it got worse before I had my first official layout.

Listen, I think all you guys have room for some more locos. There's still empty space in the horibly oversized circle and display cases need lots of friends!

Well, I ain't talkin about it. The 1st step to recovering is admitting you have a problem, and I aint ready to admit anything yet...

I can start at some point soon,my problem is that I don't know whether to do a door layout or around the wall layout.

    The perils of freelancing

I think having a prototype comes in handy if you're having trouble limiting your purchases. When I first got into N scale five years ago, I wanted to build a freelanced layout, which meant that I could buy just about anything I wanted and then make up an excuse for it. After realizing that I was spending too much, I decided to go the strict prototypical route: I resolved to model the D&RGW operations in Price Canyon, Utah, ca. 1955-1965, and I will NOT buy ANYTHING that doesn't fit into this time/place framing. I sold off the irrelevant stuff on eBay.

There are all sorts of good arguments for and against freelancing, and it's not my intent to bring them up here. I just wanted to mention that, for me, going to a strict prototype gave me a useful way to keep my spending in control. It gives me a way to say "no."

    Bigford,
I bought shelves like "secretweapons" shelves from an outfit called "Showcase Express". The shelves are aluminum with a dustproof clear window. I love 'em! The e-mail address for them is www.showcase-express.com. They're expensive but worth every penny I paid for them. Hope this helps.

That's HO scale track that I'm using for my On30 Christmas layout:

I already had an N scale layout IN the Christmas tree:

I wanted something for around the base of the tree. I thought HO would be too small and regular O gauge would take up too much room, so I settled on On30.

Had I thought it through a little better, I would have made the platform a little larger and put an N scale loop outside the HO loop. LOL!

    Darrell, quiet...for now

This is to the guys that have large collections of locos. You may want to check with your homeowners insurance agent to see if you have proper coverage for your expensive collections. I know my policy has limits to items like guns and jewelery and you will need additonal riders/endorsements if you want everything covered in an event of a fire/theft/disaster.

I have my eye on a SP Kato that I would like to buy next month. :tb-frown:

im an atlas geep addict. i like the older ones that are not ddc ready because they are heavier. 30's, 35's, 38's, and 40's. with a little lube, they run nice and quiet and smooth. i just need to figure out how to replace those anemic headlights with the newer style.

    Admission of Guilt

    Hello,

My Name is David, and I am a Locomotiveaholic.

It started out simple, a loop and a few quality locomotives and a few cars. But as I saw more an more, more and more came home with me. I was still in need of a layout.

I did stop for about 3 years or so, no new locomoitves and few new cars, but then, on a fateful day to a train store with a friend, I saw more trains and the addiction re-occured.

I thought DCC would be the answer, but it just made the problem worse. It was too easy to control locomotives and have more trains.

I will say that I had an intervention the day before yesterday and the last three locomoitve I will buy are already on thier way from BLW.

I am not proud of this, I do have a problem, my locomoitve count has surpassed 1,000.

I will need to shed many of these locomotives. My problem, which I admit here as a warning to others, was not enough focus. I was seduced by the colors and models of many railroads.

Do not let this happen to you.

It is going to hurt, but I hope to be down to less than 250 locomotives by this time next year. Before I start, I just have to figure out my era, at least I will be a Santa Fe modeler as my avatar implies.

Look for locomotives to start showing up soon here on TrainBoard. As soon as I figure out how to post etc, they will be liquidated here.

Happy New Year everyone, it is a new day......

Yes it does help to have an era, and a favorite prototype. But not that much. I have 3 favorite prototypes none of which is nationally popular, the era is clear, 1957-1967; and I've got 70+ locos with more on order?

Zeus forbid that I should model one of the favorite prototypes - you know, AT&SF, Pennsy, etc.
