This is a satellite photo of tank cars in Laurel Yard, and there is a lot of the cars marked in what looks like ZAHORIA, or something close: I have a bunch of funnel flows I want to repaint, and this roadname seems so prominent, yet i have never seen a model painted in this scheme. It looks like the ends might be red or orange, and who can deny that huge lettering? Does this roadname exist on any N Scale cars or decal sets? And if anyone knows what is the actual reporting marks, or where prototype photos are could someone point me to it? Why ask an N Scaler, when the inspection pit is probably a better forum to post this request in? Simple math... 200,000 posts vs 61,000 posts says my best chance at an answer is from someone here. Thanks in advance, Robert Ray
I'm kind of wondering if a grafitti "artist" had a lot, and I mean a LOT, of time on their hands. Looks like a lot of paint and a lot of time to tag 9 tank cars. Were these cars in storage?
Are you sure that isn't graffiti? A quick Google search says Zahoria is a region in Croatia. Could be a "Russian" gang thing... Hard to see from this altitude/angle, but the lettering doesn't look uniform enough to be a logo or brand or anything...
I have to triple the motion that that is graffiti for reasons pointed out above and because you can clearly see the lettering not placed at the same height from car to car. But graffiti or not, this sounds like a sweet fantasy road name.
HI, when I worked for BNSF in Denver we had these cars come through the yard quite often. I can not remember the reporting marks but I do believe these hauled tar. The Zahori is spanish and there is smaller lettering underneath the Zahori in spanish and the "A" is actually a Mexico flag if I remember right. The ends are red but only the top 2 or 3 feet. SHPX keeps coming to mind but don't quote me on it! These came into Denver on the Laural-to-Denver Manifest and went out on the Denver-to-Amarillo manifest I think. Forgive me I haven't worked since April. As far as decals go I have not seen them nor any manufacturers representation.
Yeah, but there are lots more of these cars in that rail yard. http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/#5...9094&z=19&h=355.50184&pid=5874/5003/o=&a=&s=w Lots and lots! There is a refinery in Laurel too, but I could not see any of the markings because the cars at the refinery are obscured by lots of plumbing. Also, that lettering is on the right side of the car, with a red or orange end on each car. You can use Bing maps to rotate around the cars as the satellite views are taken from 4 sides of each location. I don't think a graffiti artist would bother to be so consistent, ot could afford to paint up so many cars, also they would need a platform as lettering covers more than the reach of someone on the ground.
Thanks Steven, that's a great start! Zahori Tar cars... I looked up the company and they make tar paper for roofing, so now I need to find a picture and the reporting marks.
Go to rrpicturesarchives.net and search for GATX tank # 56680. You'll find a side photo of the car. Looks like an asphalt tanker from Mexico??
Hey Rob, I found them...GATX. Here is a link to Railcar Photos. http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=18418 Edit: Added another Link There are several more towards the bottom of this page: HERE Hope this helps!
Thanks for your help guys, There were a few pictures to look over, enough that I can make up some decals for my Z Scale tank cars. That is really an interesting paint scheme for a tank car, and who would have thought that a Mexican tank car could be seen in MRL territory?
Aah! Must have been the resolution/angle of the satellite shot that made the text look graffiti-ish. I stand corrected!
Dont feel bad, your not the only one. Still though, those letters from the satellite shot look more bold than the other images don't you think?
Oh, and I do very much appreciate everyone who replied to this topic, as you are all people who wanted to offer help. Being interested in pacific northwest modeling, I am always looking around the web to see what kind of rolling stock to model, and this is one of those rare finds I am looking for. Now I can add a few Mexican lessed tank cars to my roster, and my buddies cannot give me grief!
Hey, that's what we are here for....where else would everyones random train knowledge fall out? Have fun doing these up! Make sure to post some pictures too.
As a side question, (and not to hijack this thread), I've noticed the half-moons painted on the tops of tank cars coming from Mexico on the KCS. Anybody know what that's about?
Looks like your expectation proved you right! Thanks for having posted it here, I would have missed it otherwise. Definitely a bold and attractive paint scheme.
That ought to be an easy one to make! This might be helpful. If you have a good graphics program, you can manipulate the size without distortion. Too bad the writing's white.
I found a white tank car with the Zahori markings on it, which means people with inkjet printers can make decals for it, and place on a white car: GATX 46236 Zahori I'm going to have to paint one up like that for my collection. It's different, which makes it cool!
I have noticed that crescent moon painting on Mexican tank cars too, also, a sticker that says "Transportes Brago" on mexican tank cars. Must be some Mexico regulations?
