For any interested in Southern Rwy models in N scale, I received this from a mailing list. Jim King of Smokey Mountain Model Works is exploring the possibility of producing an N scale Southern bay window caboose. You'll have to let him know if you're interested. Jim has given me permission to post this here. Southern Bay Window Caboose The cabs would be ready to run and include photo-etched end railings, Micro Trains trucks/couplers, painting and ALPS-decaled with 6 or 12 road numbers to choose from. The body will be industrial grade urethane; underframe may be injection molded. Each car would be weighted, have glazed windows, and packaged in a small, padded box. The first offering would represent the 1968-1972 rebuild program (4 windows, no ladders, no roofwalk). If this is successful, we would consider offering the 7- or 8-window versions with roofwalk/ladder and different lettering styles. A roundroof is not likely due to limited interest; we might be surprised, so vote for this if you want one or more. Yellow-bays could also be offered depending on interest (including solar panels). This is not a "done deal" but can become one depending on the feedback we receive. To voice your opinion on this topic, please reply off-list with the following answers: 1. Suggested retail price. 2. Which version(s) would you buy: round roof, 8-window (1940-60s), 4-window (1968>), yellow bay. 2. How many of each version would you buy? 3. Other N scale cars you'd like to see produced. The retail price is subject to how large of a production run we think we can sell. Limited runs are a possibility although we would strive to keep as many in stock as possible for a reasonable amount of time. Thanks for your help. Jim King Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc. http://www.smokymountainmodelworks.com Jim's email is jimking3@earthlink.net I've kitbashed a few cabs to get an approximate SOU bay window. If these are produced, I may have to get a string of them.
I hope these are done. SAL and SOU are my main modeling roads. ACLer -- one of the models I told Jim I'd like to see produced is the ACL M-3 or M-5 caboose. I also told him a SOU tobacco hogshead boxcar would be nice in N too! Fortunately, I have several SAL cabs.
The M-3 would suit me as well. I bashed a stand-in from an MT wood sheathed caboose just to have something, but I'd love to see a quality model available. I mentioned a ventilated watermelon boxcar. I sure hope he gets enough interest to build some n-scale!
I'll definitely send an email. This is a model I very much need and would buy probably 6 of easily. Right now I'm stuck with the Walthers model which isn't the worst (much better than the totally unprototypical Atlas Cupola Caboose), but it could definitely be better.
Chris, I can agree on wanting a SOU tobacco hoghead car.... I used to marvel at those giants! I remember someone offered a craftsman kit in HO many years ago, but I have never seen them done in N scale. I have photos that I'd be willing to provide Harold
HH, you have photos of everything!!!! just don't post that one of me at new years with the lamp shade.....
You keep on my good side and I won't have to do that.... besides, it wasn't a lamp shade! Harold </font>[/QUOTE]
