    Hi all!

I need a kit or RTR model of some tank cars. Here's what I need:

    HO Scale
    6000-6500 gal
    Era: Pre-1940

Anybody know of any out there or am I out of luck?

    Thanks

I don't know of any RTR old tank cars out there. Roundhouses' 26' tank car is the only plastic kit I can think of. It's OOP so you have to look online and see who has these.

The other kits are all wood. Check the following manufacturers:

    LaBelle
    Trout Creek Engineering
    Yee Old Huff and Puff
    Rio Grande Models

Proto 2000 type 21. But they are 8000 gallons. They come as kit or assembled. I found some on ebay.

[edit] I did find the Roundhouse 26' tank cars on ebay, too.

Are the MDC cars less than 8000 gallons?

Tichy makes some very nice tank car kits from around 1940. Not to steal a topic but does anyone know where I could get tank car decals??

Thanks.. I forgot about those lovely P2K models. I was drooling over a few at a train show years back.

When it comes to decals I use Champ or Microscale. I ordered from Champ 2 months ago and the service and product quality were excellent. I have never had issues with Microscale's quality. Herald King is OK, though I do not know if they are still in business.

Go to these sites and look:

    Champ decals: http://www.minot.com/champ/

Microscale decals: Model Railroad Decals and Stickers - Microscale Industries

Herald King: http://www.heraldking.com Yep, they're still in business.

You can also look into making your own, as long as you have a quality ink jet printer and do not need white letters. Though, I think I have scene white ink carts every once in a while, so maybe you could do white lettering and art.

    Thank you very much Mark!!
Micro scale dosn't have tank car decals, Hearld King does, never heard of them before. I thought Champs was out of business, and that link didn't work, but I have there site written down somewhere, I will give them a try also.
I also have a few of the PK2 tank cars, they are excellent.

Back to tank cars...to my knowledge the only tank cars less than 8,000 gallons that have been offered in HO scale are the MDC 26' tank cars already mentioned. Yes, they are less than 8,000 gallons- somewhere around 5,000-6,000 gallons by my estimation. Several manufacturers make 8,000 gallon tank cars, or at least have made them in the past...the P2K models are good ones, and are fun kits to put together (I have no experience with their ready to run models). Stewart has also made them. I think Tichy does as well. There are a number of 10,000 gallon tanks available as well, including another P2K model and some Red Caboose models.

What are your needs with the car? If you're willing to consider a homebuilt affair, you can always mount a small tank of some sort on a flatcar. You might also consider scratchbuilding using plastic tubing.

Attached are a couple cars I've built. One is a P2K 8,000 gallon tank car modified with walkways and railings. The other is a fire car I built using one of the old MDC tank car bodies on a flatcar of unknown origin that someone gave me years ago.

I corrected the web link for Champ in my post, but here it is:

    http://www.minot.com/champ/

I thought they would have been closed down by now, too. I read 5 years ago when they stopped their catalog, that they were running out the stock on hand and that was it. But, things change, and for once for the better. The stuff I received a few months ago was fresh, well packaged and looks great.
