So, Unstoppable was AWESOME. I highly reccomend it. For moi, I was more into the action than to be saying "Can't be done...Can't be done...Can't be done..." Others may vary. And really, I'd say they got it about 70-80% right. There's a few things, train walking being one of them, and the guy on a fishhook (we see him in the trailers) was just a stupid ploy all around, I can point out three opportunities the yardie missed (ie, the runningsteps on the back and the other engine), the rest I'll hold off on until more of you can see it.

Oh, look at the oncomming shots of the train. In a few, yo can make out sunshades (like for car windshields) over the brakeman's side. I'll just bet there's an engineer behind it, though I suppose he could also be in the trailing loco.

Over all it was a good movie. They didn't take too many liberties with R R reality , it was at least believable . The action was non stop, and the Destruction scenes ( except for 1 ) were all real as far as I could tell. I give it 3.5 out of 4 waffels.

    Other good train movies :

    Emperor of the north
    Von Ryans Express
    The Train
    Breakhart Pass

Yes, but the big question is, who is going to be the first to do this in O/HO/N/Z Scale? :)
I can see it now, a non responsive DCC equipped loco pulling a bunch of scratch built freight cars. Oh no! Now, have another train running on the same track towards the runaway train. Will you make it into a siding in time? If you do, you now have to roll out of the siding backwards and latch onto the runaway train and slow it down without damaging anything. That would be a fun session!!

Been there, done that. It's called "Proving the the Club President that DCS is NOT 100% compatible with DCC while I chase down his expensive model of 4449 so I can tip it off of one rail to get it to reset and respond" :tb-tongue:

Ofcourse, I'm doing with the paired 0-5-0 lashup, but still...

You're absolutely correct. I betcha if this movie was made 100% true to life, there STILL would be a group of cranky, people-with-no-lives rivet-counter types who would voice their opinions that this movie is totally unrealistic! LOL!

    I Saw It Last Night

The family and I saw this last night, it was better than I expected! I only thought "oohh come on" one time. Keep in in mind I did not go to pick this movie apart, I went to see a good story and excitement and that is exactly what I got! Hell I even laughed a few times.

BTW has anyone EVER herd of molten hydroxide? Sounds dangerous, thats why they used it in the movie. But I,m thinking Hydroxide is highly flamable. Guessing you don't want to get it hot let alone put it into a molten state :D ....Mike

Hydroxide ( OH to a chemist ) can usually be found paired with other elements, like sodium hydroxide. Now, if they really wanted to tweak somebody, they coulda had the tank cars labeled "MOLTEN DIHYDROGEN MONOXIDE".

Now THAT would be scary- a fast-moving runaway train carrying carloads of WATER...........

Thanks, but I'll save my money to buy a DVD of "Emperor of the North"- at least that one has a decent story line.

How can we forget a classic kids movie? Polar Express! Not very realistic, but still cool.

    My review of Unstoppable

I saw it today at a matinee for 5.00 and got a free tub of popcorn. That in it itself was a bonus.
The story was pretty good. The action was pretty much nonstop. The movie didn't get to technical, so anyone would enjoy it , I thought.
Denzel is really believable in his role too. I, along with Roger Ebert give it :thumbs_up:.
Go see it you won't be dissapointed.

MTL makes a 3bay WP car with a blue end. It would make an addition to their Weathered line.

Not sure who owns the Penzee molds in Z scale? Could be a Bowser connection? Would make a nice addition to the Full Throttle cars pulled by MTL SD40-2.

    Well, I saw it tonight.

It's not as bad as I thought it might be, considering. There's so much implausible action in it that I don't think that the general public will take it seriously. It's entertainment. If anything, reviewing the actual story from '01 is concern enough.

I have to admit I laughed out loud, in the theatre, when the throttle moved by itself as the 'cause'.... wow, ghostbusters meets runaway train. Hadn't heard about that.

I explained it to my wife this way... you know that incident with the cruise ship last week where they had the engine room fire, lost power and had to be towed back to port? They just made a new movie about it.... "The Poseidon Adventure" .... inspired by actual events!

Then even she understood. It doesn't make it a bad movie, it's just so far divorced from either fact or the 'true event' that it's hard to take it seriously. I couldn't. And I think the good part is that nobody else does either. Its just entertainment.

I know several people in the area that worked on the movie that insisted that their name, company, etc. were to be removed from the credits after they saw it. I understand that now as well.

A couple of the true details got so overblown and exagerated by the movie that they now appear farcical - the truck pursuit of the train (which in real life I think was maybe 20mph), and the State Police taking a shot at the fuel shutoff button.... Lining up seven derailiers that explode like they were made of C4.... Yeah.

The other thing I got a great laugh out of was the 'speed' of the train. If you'd see the track they actually filmed over, you'd laugh too. If you look carefully at the movie you'll see that where they couldn't doctor the film speed up the train is moving maybe 25mph (mostly front shots). They sped the bejeesus out of it on the side shots, but where they had cars, people, other things, it was a little more difficult to exaggerate.

Now if you REALLY wanted a movie with 80 mph runaways, real fireballs, a conspiracy theory, human tragedy, and dump the wreck on a FLAMMABLE HIGH PRESSSURE PIPELINE... review the 1996 Cajon Pass runaway where they lost their brakes. How that one didn't get selected and this one did is beyond me. The full NTSB report is out there, and they never did conclusively determine if there was human sabotage on the angle cock toward the front of the train, but that entire area is now security fenced today.

Was it just me or did anyone else notice the groundhog running across the tracks??*L* I took the wife and she liked it better than I did. I worked on the railroad for twelve years and caught myself laughung out loud once or twice.Actually I feel the general public will enjoy it more than any railroader. But basic mindless none stop action. I wonder if I could duplicate the scene around the curve in N scake with the wheels off the rail?*G*

LOL I just remembered some old thomas the tank engine episode from 10 years ago where James started out of the station and couldn't use the brakes without an engineer.

    Ahh, photographic memory... it's a blessing and a burden.:tb-embarrassed:

I think an ex-Pere Marquette berkshire and a string of heavyweight passenger cars falling through the ice--and having ALL of it's wheels land perfectly on the rails--is completely realistic.

However I don't like the recessed headlight. They should've gone with a pyle national. With the visor, of course. :tb-rolleyes:
