Just saw on the news the nasty flooding over there in Sedona. You ok there? Hope it all missed you and you are safe. Just a concerned friend. thnxs :tb-sad: .
Yeah, we got hammered pretty hard. Lots of flooding, lots of cars damaged and some even got caught in the water and were pulled down stream. People trapped inside flooding buildings. Mud and debris everywhere. They had to bring out a grader to clear some spots of hwy 89a in town. And all this in about 30 minutes of rain. Flash floods are no joke! Pics are from friends Taken from inside a shop in Tlaquepaque This car went was in the parking lot to the right of the picture. Ended up way down to the left. All these cars were in a parking lot to the right of the person walking. M&I bank drive thru Mike
Wow, that’s a lot of water and incredible damage for such a short period of time. I don’t know how I missed that on the news. I’ll have to keep that in mind when looking for a place to retire to in AZ. A few years back we had heard it was raining in another town about 15 miles away and decided to take a ride over there to see the rain. It had been quite a while since we saw any rain. By the time we got there it was done, but we could see that the cloud had doubled back around right over our house, so we went home as fast as we could. When we finally got home, it was over and the street was under a foot of water. My back yard had flooded overflowing my pond with fish flopping on the lawn. My garden was totally destroyed along with a couple of those yard shad things. We just could not believe that we drove over 15 miles just to miss the whole thing.
Thnxs Mike... As long as YOU are ok. Living in Arizona...we know how distructive those flash floods are. Just had me worried as I watched the news last night.
....until it slides down the hill and becomes a creekside lot Doug, from your lot, I bet you'd have a really good vantage point of all the chaos that occurred down at Los Ab and Tlaquepaque. Johnny, that's crazy! I was worried about my pond also, didn't want the Koi flopping around on the grass, so I kept an eye on them. George, yeah, my house is just fine, although the wash that runs next to it was pretty darn full. The roof over the layout did it's job and the brown patches in my grass are already starting to green up. Mike
So, Doug is that lot for you to move to and how is it there in Sedona, besides flash floods? I’m looking for a place to move to when I retire in a couple of years.
Yeah, bought the lot to build on for retirement back before the first market bust. Just about made it back and the second bust hit. Had those two not happened, I'd be helping Pastoolio with his layout, but it looks like he'll have to wait a couple of years more. :tb-confused: The wife and I love the area. She grew up in the east, but loves the west, and I'm a California ex-pat. A couple of flash floods and a fire or two are tolerable. At least no hurricanes or earthquakes.
That's fine Doug, at the rate I'm going, I might have the main line done by the time you get here. Amen to that!
This why i like the North East , around the philly area, no hurricanes, not allot of snow, NO earth quakes, NO tornadoes, no flooding, atleast where i am. I'm planning on staying right here when i retire in 3 more months. I like the change of seasons and besides why would i move to someplace that i don't know anybody. I have been to Arizona---TOO darn hot for me, Florida---too hot, New orleans---Too hot. Seems like i have the perfect place, great weather, my freinds, my family and my trains--don't get much better than that. Dave
I think I’m on the same train. I was looking at property around Kingman when the first bust happened. I'm depending a lot on the sale of my house in CA as part of my retirement so now I’m stuck here for a few more years until the market goes up. I just can’t get out of here fast enough. Three of my coworkers including my boss retired to New Mexico, but It’s a little far for me to check out. I’ll have to take a little trip to Sedona one of these days.
mike glad to hear your O.K.!!! we had some real heavy rain here on Long Island yesterday, lasted one hour and flooded low spots on the highway. BUT nothing like what you posted WOW!!!
Sounds like what we have down here in the Houston area. It's not too hot. Well from October to April anyway. As for hurricanes, my neighborhood actually looks much better than it did a little over a year ago before Ike. All new fences, new shingles on the roofs, trees are nicely pruned back letting the grass grow again. It was getting where not much grew well at ground level due to the dense canopy of leaves overhead. We can see the sky again.
There is one ting you forgot to mention... There are no active Volcanoes in Arizona either. The closest one is in Mammoth Lakes CA. I too have land in Arizona for one day when my wife decides it is time to leave California. Some day this Arizona ex-patriot hopes to go home.....
Mike, Wow, saw this on the news but your photos look worse. Glad you were lucky. Agree with Dave- "Seems like i have the perfect place, great weather, my freinds, my family and my trains--don't get much better than that. " BUT - Those are the reasons I like Arizona, no floods in Flagstaff! (If you forget the Rio de Flag in 1937). Ernie C (42 years at 7000 ft.-still dry)

David, you're right about active one's, but if the dormant San Francisco peaks in Flagstaff every decide to spew, then we're all done for around here. Rodney, thanks for linking the video, pretty cool! The wash that had the AZ sign in the water is the wash that did all the damage. That thing was at least 10-15 feet higher than what was flowing in the video. The place is still a mud hole right now, but the shops are starting to open back up. Mike
Actually, if I remember correctly, San Francisco Peaks is an extinct volcano. In any event, I am shocked to see what happened in Sedona but am glad that you and several other people I know in that area are safe and sound. Well this was the 100 year or the 200 year flood? In either case, I think it will be a while before this happens again. It should be a good reminder to not develop in a dry river basin again.
